Gil Swett '17 Given Bequest Chairman Honors
JUNE 1969

Named request Chairman or the Year at the meeting of class officers in Hanover on May 3 was Gilbert N. Swett '17. The follow ing tribute to his servuces to Dartmouth was read at the gatherins:

Your distinguished career as World War I aviator, founder of the New Jersey National Guard Air Unit, Air Corps staff officer during World War II and retired rank of Lieutenant Colonel testifies eloquently to your devotion to country and duty. Your venturesome spirit was further tested and proved by your chosen occupation of selling victrolas to the Indians and cowboys of Wyoming in the early twenties, advertising space in a national magazine a few years later and, finally, real estate to the denizens of Northern New Jersey until your retirement to Florida in 1959.

Since your graduation you have been a loyal and devoted Son of Dartmouth, serving as a long-time assistant Alumni Fund agent for your class, enrollment chairman for your chunk of Florida and former President and current Secretary of the very active and important Dartmouth Club of Sarasota.

Today, however, we honor you as a Class Bequest Chairman who started in this business simultaneously with the inauguration of Dartmouth's Bequest and Estate Planning Program in 1951. In the past nineteen years this program has produced over $37,000,000 for the College, and your conscientious zeal and dedication in promoting its importance in your class and your unique "annual report" method of keeping your classmates informed as to its progress, explains why 1917 is one of the program leaders in class participation. Practicing what you preach, you have established a fine Alumni Fund endowment of your own.

Now, in honor of your nineteen years as Bequest Chairman of your class and in recognition of a lifetime of devoted effort on Dartmouth's behalf, the Association of Bequest and Estate Planning Chairmen is proud to proclaim you as Bequest Chairman of the Year.
