By Mark H. Smaller, D.D.S.'53. Illustrated by Al Scaduto. New York:Exposition Press, 1969. Pages Unnumbered.$4.00.
This entertaining little book has been needed for some time. With the great strides that dentistry has made in the past decade, the first visit to the dentist could truly be an adventure.
Through the use of catchy rhymes and clever illustrations the author has succeeded in describing such an adventure. All aspects of the dental visit are mentioned, including the seating of the patient and a fanciful description of the instruments and equipment used. At the same time the ease and importance of having children's teeth x-rayed, cleaned, and filled are stressed.
This volume can be read by parents to young children who can easily follow the excellent illustrations. Today's parents will find it easier to introduce their children to regular dental care and dismiss the anxiety of the past. And today's dentist would like to begin regular examinations when the child is three years old.
This could be a very useful book - perhaps one that every dentist should have in his waiting room. The rhymes are written by Dr. Smoller, a practicing Long Island, N. Y., dentist, while the illustrations are by Al Scaduto, a cartoonist best known for his humorous "They'll Do It Every Time."
Dr. Small has been engaged in the practiceof dentistry in Hanover for the past 20years.
