On Valentine's Day Bob Blackman stopped between planes to show football highlights and to meet and talk with football prospects. Jerry Bentley '62 was in charge and Monte Pascoe '57 lent the Denver football atmosphere and Seymour Wheelock '40 the dignity. Because the state high school wrestling championship meet was going on the attendance was small but it gave Bob a chance to talk to each boy at length.
On February 25 a cocktail party was held at the University Club to finalize plans and recruit volunteer helpers to run the high school ski meet. Anson Mark '53, Jack Jacobey '51, Bill Bos '65, Jim Swanson '59,ten Tobias '41, and their wives plus Colin Stewart '48, Don McMichael '53 and Lee Ambrose '59 headed a group of stalwarts giving out assignments.
The monthly luncheon was held February 27 at the University Club. John Ratigan '61 reported a goodly number of applications for admission to the College had been filed and he was impressed with the high quality of the hopefuls. Don Jones '43 put in a plug for the Glee Club concert and Anson Mark'53 reminded everyone of the ski meet. Mr. Charles Henning, Executive Vice President, Savings and Loan League of Colorado, gave a very interesting talk on the role of the lobbyist in the legislative process. Without lobbyist arguing on different sides of a question many congressmen would not know enough about a subject to vote intelligently.
The Annual Dartmouth Ski Race was held March 8 at Winter Park. This race is for Front Range high school boys. Pre-race planning was done by Jack Jacobey '51. He was called out of town and Anson Mark'53 was the maestro supported by Don McMichael '53, Colin Stewart '48, and Lee Ambrose '59 with invaluable help from Patty Mark and Zeta McMichael took care of the hill duties and put on a successful meet. The Edwin Grant '30 Memorial Trophy was won by Ray Hilliard of Cherry Creek High School for the top individual performance and the Dartmouth Cup was captured by Ray and his team-mates for the best team effort.
Lady Luck smiled. It had been snowing on and off for several days but cleared on March 25 and in spite of sick air controllers the Glee Club flew in almost on time. The boys were taken to Larimer Square in a double decker London Bus and then to the Denver Athletic Club for swimming or any other exercise they might need to get the kinks out before the concert.
A hard working committee consisting of Donald W. Jones '43 Chairman, Sky Cross '46, Housing; Tom Fead '56, Ticket Sales; Bob Jeavons '48, Finances; Phil Johnson '49, Entertainment; Don McMichael '53, Underwriting; Walt Olin '44, Ushers; Gerry Samuelson '55, Schools; Derrill deS. Trenholm '40, Publicity.; and Bob White '42, Direct Mail had a fine house of nine hundred on hand. In the front rows were forty girls from Temple Buell College; the male-female reaction was spontaneous and the manly voices rose to the occasion.
After the concert the younger contingent, seventy-five and under, repaired to the Yum Yum Tree Food Bazaar for refreshments, dancing and more songs by the Injunaires. It was a great evening and made many new friends for Dartmouth in Denver.
