Class Treasurer of the Year
JUNE 1970

Cited as Class Treasurer of the Year at the annual meeting of class officers in Hanover on May 2 was Richard Dale Barker '54. The citation accompanying the award read:

A good class treasurer is hard to come by, but 1954 benefited from a nice combination of good judgment and good luck when it elected you to that office two years ago. In your first year you boosted the percentage of dues-payers in your class from 63% to 70%, an exceptional figure for a class so large and so young. This year, despite an increase in class dues, you have lost very few dues-payers and have held your overall percentage at 69%, a performance matched by no other class after 1923.

ALUMNI MAGAZINE circulation is at a healthy 93% of your entire class. Your cooperation with Hanover has been exemplary, and the MAGAZINE especially appreciates you because the paying of your class group subscription bill in due season does not develop into a tug of war.

The state of 1954 finances was healthy when you took over from Kent Klineman and now they can be described as robust. Included in a class surplus of enviable size are a substantial investment fund and a growing memorial book fund. The financial competence you bring to 1954 as former treasurer and now vice president of the Andover Institute of Business justifies a slight switch in the advertising slogan to read: "You are in good hands with Barker."

In recognition of your model performance as class treasurer, and also in tribute to your Dartmouth and community services ever since graduation, we honor you as Dartmouth Class Treasurer of the Year.
