James Cunningham Bingham '18 was honored as Class Newsletter Editor of the Year at the meeting of class officers in Hanover on May 2. Accompanying the award was the following citation:
The Bingham family in itself is a Dartmouth tradition. It is a great host of great-great-greats, great-greats, greats and grands of fathers, uncles, and nephews including also the usual big-family contingent of cousins, once, twice and thrice removed. In addition to the Binghams there are the related Goodalls, Woods, Hutchins, Cunninghams, Johnsons, Blandins, and Glovers in many classes from 1777 to 1970. In the nineteenth century there was at least one Bingham at Dartmouth in each decade except one when perhaps they were more concerned with reducing the population of the South than producing progeny for Dartmouth. This omission was taken care of by having an honorary AM given to grandfather George Azro Bingham in 1876.
For seven years you have been producing the ROAR for the equally large number in your '18 family. Your generation of personal items by mail has been most successful but when there were temporary shortages you presented your solid gold railroad pass to the nearest ticket agent and rode the rails in search of news. In the absence of deluxe trains like the Twentieth Century Limited, it is rumored that now you are riding the rods to find your man and report his roar even if it is only a delicate, plaintive mew. However in doing this you never missed a session of the New Hampshire Legislature. You also found time in your busy life to be President of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Merrimack County, New Hampshire.
In recognition and appreciation of your interesting publications and your service to the class and the College, we are proud to designate you Class Newsletter Editor of the Year.
