The events of Strike Week at Dartmouth were of such magnitude that a group of undergraduates felt a special effort should be made to explain the actions of that time to the alumni of the College. They approached the editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE with the suggestion that a portion of the June issue be given over to a student-written report of the strike. He was receptive to the idea and the students soon assembled a team of writers to research and compile the story of the multiple activities of the week.
The editorial coordinators of this efforts were Ken Bruntel '71, editor of the Dartmouth Course Guide, and Ralph Child '72, publisher of the Dartmouth Review. Writers included Bill Koenig '70, Jeff Eagan '70, Chris Crosby '71, Jeff Leighton '71, Rees Toothman '71, David Aylward '71, Cleve Webber, and Charles Smith '73. Faculty contributors were James Davis, Guy de Mallac-Sauzier, Jonathan Mirsky, and Charles Wood. Due to space limitations not all of their contributions appear in full form.
The running chronology of the week, prepared by Win Rockwell '70 and David Masselli '70, benefited greatly from the reports and suggestions of this group. All the contributors to this issue were deeply involved in the activities of Strike Week; we have striven for as much objectivity as possible, but felt it was also important to report on the subjective feelings that we, along with most other members of the Dartmouth community, experienced that week. We hope that this section will give readers some feel for the ethos of today's College.
We especially wish to thank Charles Widmayer for the understanding and advice which made this effort possible.
