Two new Third Century Professorships were established by action of the Board of Trustees during the summer. Supported by contributions to the Third Century Fund, they are the Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professorship in the Humanities and the John Sloan Dickey Third Century Professorship in the Social Sciences.
The two additions bring the total of Third Century Professorships to three, encompassing the three general divisions of academic disciplines. President Kemeny holds the previously established Albert Bradley Third Century Professorship in the sciences.
Ted Geisel '25 of La Jolla, Calif., is the cartoonist-writer and alter ego of Dr. Seuss. He and his late wife, who collaborated with him on his creations, have assigned royalties from their books to the College.
The professorship honoring President Emeritus Dickey was established by an anonymous donor.
The Third Century Professorships were created specifically to encourage innovation in teaching. The endowed chairs carry, in addition to salary, $10,000 annually to underwrite experiments in teaching methods.
Seven other chairs have been endowed with contributions to the Third Century Fund. They are the Henry R. Luce Professorship in Environmental Studies, the Avalon Foundation Professorship in the Humanities, the William E. Kenan Jr. Professorship in English, the Jacob H. Strauss Class of 1922 Professorship of Music, the Preston H. Kelsey Class of 1925 Professorship of Religion, the Nathan Smith Professorship of Medicine, established by the Vivian Beaufort Allen Foundation to honor the founder of the Dartmouth Medical School, and the Gross Taylor and Cornelius Pierce Williams Assistant Professorship of Biology.
