Dartmouth Course Guide
DECEMBER 1971

For the fifth time since 1968 Dartmouth Course Guide appeared on campus last month. A student-written collection of faculty and course reviews, the Guide this year contains 128 essays covering every department. The attractively 156-page book gives an overall insight into Dartmouth's academics, through an analysis of particulars. In the introduction, entitled "To the Happy Few," the key assessment runs: "Liberal education should be an individual, active, and uniquely liberating experience. Quite simply, at Dartmouth it is not." Yet thumbing through the reviews, one also finds a fundamental appreciation of much Dartmouth teaching.

Students who have taken the course or majors who have participated in the department write the critiques, which are partially based upon students' response to questionnaires on their courses. This statistical data is also published for almost every course in the fall and winter terms.

Michael F. Mellin '72 edited the Guide. which was published by Ralph A. Child '72. Peter A. Cohen '72, Patrick F. Kennedy '73. Jonathon D. Low '73, and John P. Harrington '73 assisted. Christopher Keith '73 was responsible for design, while Won Chung '73 contributed the art work.

The Course Guide may be purchased for $3.00 from the Dartmouth Course Guide. Hinman Box 749, Hanover, N. H. 03755,
