The Charles A. Dana Foundation has awarded the Dartmouth Medical School a $600,000 grant toward construction of a fourth floor to the Dana Biomedical Library, built in 1963 under an earlier Dana Foundation grant. In acknowledging this renewed support, Dean Carleton B. Chapman called the library a "fundamental resource" and said that its development is a key element in the new three-year M.D. program inaugurated last year.
At the present time the Library has 85,000 volumes pertaining to the life sciences, biology, and medicine, and subscribes to more than 2000 periodicals. In addition to expanding floor space by one-third, the new construction will ultimately include installation of sophisticated library sciences equipment with a modern system of microfilm storage and retrieval of periodicals and infrequently used bibliographic material.
Additional funds are still to be raised to finance the total construction cost, but architectural plans are already in hand, with construction tentatively scheduled to start next fall and be completed by late 1972.
