John S. McGeachie '65, Assistant Director for Systems Development at the Kiewit Computation Center, has been appointed Director of the Data Processing Center, succeeding Henry H. McClintock '45 who resigned to assume a position with the University of Rhode Island.
Mr. McGeachie, who will retain his Kiewit position, will concentrate on developing a single computing system which integrates the administration's use of data processing with the academic and research use of the Kiewit Center by students and faculty. As a first step toward this goal, the programming staff of the Data Processing Center will be moved from McNutt Hall to the Kiewit Center.
As an undergraduate, Mr. McGeachie was one of a handful of students who helped develop the original version of the Dartmouth Time-Sharing System, and he was co-architect of the Executive program which enables independent computers to communicate with each other and a large number of users at the same time.
Prior to joining the Kiewit Center in 1968, Mr. McGeachie was employed for a year by the General Electric Company and then served three years as senior staff consultant for Mandate Systems, Inc., a New York-based computer consulting firm.
