With all the discussion, pro and con, on the pressing question of coeducation at Dartmouth, Richard K. Montgomery '35 instills a breath of real Dartmouth spirit with his timely Letter to the Editor in the February 1971 issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Writing under the title, "The Masculine Virtues," Montgomery strikes a key note which of a certainty must well express the opinions of many of the older grads when he writes, "if the main thrust of undergraduate life is not man-to-man competition and companionship but rather a race to develop a meaningful relationship with a woman—then life on campus may be more agreeable than it was in our undergraduate days, but Dartmouth will have lost its uniqueness, its vitality, and its greatness."
Understandably both our recent graduates and our esteemed president who lacks the undergraduate Dartmouth experience do not appreciate that "there is a need for a strong all-male college where young men learn to live with men, adjust to other men, and compete with men, as they must in later life."
John Brewster reports a visit from Chuck Tangrer and his son, the latter an alumnus of Franklin and Marshall College. John also approves of his new relationship with Oliver Kent under the aegis of the Mayflower. Jo Adams suggests the 1912 widows contribute a few dollars to help pay for their copies of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. A good idea, says Treasurer Fletcher Clark, as it will help carry the load of the Class. It looks like our dues must be increased to keep abreast of inflation. Jo added her ante.
After two long years we've received news from Chet Newcomb. What we didn't know is that he represented the Class at Bud Hoban's funeral. Chet reports that after 15 years of retirement residence in Florida both he and Laura have been given passing grades on their physical checkups. He is an ardent supporter of the Dartmouth Club in Fort Lauderdale, called "of the Gold Coast."
Word comes from Emma Pettingell that Alice Hitchcock, Chub's widow, passed away in Hingham, Mass., on March 14. 1971. Funeral services were planned to be held in Hanover, N. H.
