President Kemeny spoke informally at the dinner, reviewing some of the campus events since the Council's 'January meeting and once again praising the quality of the present student body. He saw the '7os as a decade in which Dartmouth would make use of its unique assets to move ahead among the colleges of America.

Two general sessions of the Council on Thursday and a third on Friday morning heard reports from all the committees, which held breakfast, luncheon, and evening meetings throughout the three-day gathering. The time for general business on Friday morning was devoted primarily to the coeducation issue. The Council was asked to adopt the following resolution drawn up by the ten past and the current president of the 50-year Class of 1921 and presented by Robert P. Burroughs '21:

Convinced that the adoption of coeducation would profoundly alter the character of Dartmouth College, and

Believing that action to establish coeducation at Dartmouth College at this juncture would be dangerous, for the reasons set forth by former Trustee John L. Sullivan in his 50-Year Address delivered on June 12, 1971,

Urges that study be given to the effect of coeducation on previously all-male institutions that are comparable to Dartmouth, and that in the meantime action to establish coeducation at Dartmouth be withheld, and

Express the opinion that the effects of coeducation—especially at Yale and Princeton—cannot be measured for two or three years, and accordingly believes that it would not be prudent to reach a final decision on coeducation for Dartmouth prior to 1973.

After discussion, the Council adopted an amendment: "That the Council of Alumni transmit the resolution without recommendation directly to the Board of Trustees."

Alumni Council Officers: Sandy McCulloch '50 (c), newly elected president, withVice President Vincent Jones '52 (l) and Secretary Michael McGean '49.
