President Kemeny has announced a renewal grant of $100,000 from the Richard King Mellon Charitable Trusts for Dartmouth's Urban Studies Program, which during the past year has been augmented to include regional studies of the northern New England area.
Program projects have ranged from studies of the availability of social and human resources in Upper Valley communities in the vicinity of Hanover to cooperative Dartmouth-MIT internships with the Boston City Council. They have included field work on public institutions and community ecology in Manchester, N. H., internships in Jersey City schools, and studies of local financial structures supporting public education in New Hampshire.
Expansion of the program to include regional studies reflects the College's increasing commitment to the northern New England area of which the College is a part.
S. Russell Stearns '37, Professor of Civil Engineering at the Thayer School, will direct the Urban Studies Program during this academic year. Last year it was run by Franklin Smallwood '51, Professor of Government, who is currently on leave of absence.
