I have to tell you that the Princeton weekend get-to-gether was the best ever. There were over 90 members and kin in Parker Soule's famous tent on Saturday morning, and, as usual, we rode in luxury to the game in a couple of pullman-style buses. After the game 71 gathered for dinner and festivities in one of the new motels in W. R. Jet. (How times have changed down there!) Parker gives you more details in his Newsletter.
From the Seamen's Church Institute in Philadelphia comes the following by Rev.Jim McElroy: "Donna and I are fine. I think we are kept too busy but this makes the time fly. We always seem to have something waiting that should have been done yesterday!" They hoped to make the Yale game and then Penn game but couldn't get to Hanover for the Princeton affray.
Doug Woodring writes: "We just had a great weekend at 'The Nature of New England III' seminar at North Truro, Mass. Enjoyed some time with Pan Kent, the only other '31er there. Was struck by the number of older grads—who turned out to be grizzly-beards from classes in the '40's and '50's. Their wives were nice, tho."
From Jim Rick: "After a year and a half and two operations I at long last look, act and feel like a human being again. Nuff said. We moved into a condominium (Reading, Pa.) this summer and love it. No longer am I faced with yard care, snow blowing, etc. We now have 3 2/3 grandchildren."
Red Gristede had a great vacation this summer in England and Scotland for three weeks. He says he had excellent service with 16-year-old chambermaids serving him breakfast in bed cheerily, without tipping! He observes that Scots gals are built a little differently than other women, but still identifiable. What a connoisseur!
Nice bag of news from John Boermeester: "We" ate our way through Norway, Sweden and Denmark early this summer and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Met Hank and Rose McCarthy at the wedding of Nancy Loveland (youngest daughter of Alice and Dave Loveland). The Cloughs, Bensons and Boermeesters had a reunion with Betty and BernieBoyle at their summer home in Manchester, Mass., complete with golf. Bernie enjoying retirement and planning to return to Naples. Fla.. in October."
Dutch Holland writes: "Had a couple of rounds of golf with Ed Studwell in September. Red Gristede and CharlieSchneider showed up last spring (in Hilton Head Island, S. C.) and we had a great reunion along with some good eating and drinking."
Charlie Schneider himself gives us this tidbit: "My new wife's name is Katherine. We were married in July." Congratulations, Charlie and Katherine; you are now, for the time being, the Class newlyweds. I can remember when Trudy and I were the Class newlyweds but that was almost nine years ago and we are now on our second washing machine!
From Doug Wilson: "Saw Rod andKate Hatcher this summer. Have been back at work full time for almost a year now, since my heart attack and am still feeling fine. I think I'll retire sometime next year and enjoy loafing for a while. I've worked long enough." Here comes another retiree!
Doug Morris writes briefly: "I'm gonna miss the involvement in '31 things. Maybe when this new madness settles down I can swing the bit again for D." Doug is heavily involved with a new franchise business.
From Lighthouse Point, Fla., says GrayMagee: "Have moved here lock stock and barrel. The geritol flag flies here daily at 5:30 so feel free one and all to join a daily '31 Up! at our place." Mates, this looks like a wide open invitation, so here's Gray's phone number (which he listed himself): 305/946-1453. Prosit!
Chan Griggs advises: "Emmie and I had hoped to get to the Princeton game but local activities did not permit. A long-standing desire to revisit Manilla, P. 1., after 22 years was satisfied in August when we took a tour to Japan, Taipan, Manilla, Hong Kong and Honolulu. Saw many old Filipino friends." Sounds like a magnificent trip.
George Stevens busy getting settled in the San Diego area. "We have seen Boband Laura Zimmerman. Am teaching at California Western School of Law—most enjoyable, with good students and a fine faculty."
See you all next month. There's more to come.
