Newsletter Editor of the Year
JUNE 1972

Sherman Lewis Smith '17 was honored as Class Newsletter Editor of the year at the Annual Class Officers Weekend May 5 in Hanover. He received the following citation:

Because you have lived in Quanset, Cowesett and on a hill spot overlooking Narragansett, none should assume that it has been your habit just to "set." From the long list of your articles which have appeared in leading advertising journals, it is clear that whenever you were settin' you also must have been writin'.

Let's make another thing perfectly clear—you're a word saver. You always have been a disciple of concise writing—putting much into a few words. You went into automobile advertising when it was not unusual to see full page ads filled with technical specifications. You had other ideas. You developed and wrote REO-GRAMS which were so effective that you were commissioned to continue writing these telegram-brief ads for a long time after you left the automobile business.

Then you became Advertising Manager for Boston Wire Stitcher Company which soon was known as BOSTITCH and you established yourself as a letter saver. There is no evidence that you are a string saver but many have suspicions.

The record in 1924 shows that you were Class Editor, so when you became Newsletter Editor in 1961 and Secretary in 1968 you brought to both jobs some experience in class chronicling that was brief in form, comprehensive in scope and free-flowing in style. You make the SENTRY walk its post in an engaging manner, allowing all to commit to paper their views on subjects vital to the Class and the College. Your birthday card concession is operated faithfully and currently your 55th Reunion promotion is a model of perfect persuasion.

It is an honor to name you Class Newsletter Editor of the Year.
