During the long summer recess, we received some interesting letters and new releases. Bill andBarbara Wood are living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She writes: "Bill and I and our two children, Winston and Elizabeth, are on the verge of moving to Sao Paulo where Bill will be the managing director of Credicard, a credit card company owned by First National City Bank of New York and several Brazilian banks.
"South America has been our home for seven years now, first Bolivia, then Peru, and now Brazil where we have made the switch from Spanish to Portuguese. Except for our home leaves, we must depend upon letters for contact with other '61 graduates. Last January, while skiing in Reno, we had the opportunity to enjoy an evening with Tomand Diane Russell and their two sons, Bill and Britt. We spoke by phone with Bare Corbus who is still in Denver and has gone into business for himself. On the peninsula we had a lively visit with Bill and Susie Bull and their son, Jimmy. Subse quently they have become the parents of a daughter Kathy. Bill works for Hewlett-Packard designing pocket calculators. Was interested to read about Dick Lemke who has a high school classmate of mine in California."
Fritz Kern writes from Palos Verdes, Calif. "With no contact since our 10th reunion, I thought I'd bring you up-to-date on what', happening. The past year has been one of big changes, some good, some bad. I'm now a bachelor of sorts, having gone through a divorce about six months ago. My children are living with their mother only a short distance from my new place, my fourth address in a year!
"I recently celebrated my fourth anniversary with Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., the importer. After three and one-half years as Parts Marketing Manager, I was appointed Sales Administration Manage: last January. This month (July), I moved to the position of Dealer Planning and Placemen: Manager. This new assignment involves market representation planning, dealer franchising and dealership facility planning. I'll be doing a fair amount of traveling, which should result in some reunions with long-lost Dartmouth friends. Last year, I spent nearly a month in Japan on business, and it looks like this may be a once-a-year trip. I sure hope so.
"I look forward to hearing from '61s as they pass through this area. Really, the smog and freeways aren't as bad as you've read. As for other 61s: John Hadley is a prosperous architect here in L.A.; Tony Wattleworth is doctoring in Bend, Oregon."
Dr. Charlie Francis has been given appointment as assistant professor of Medicine, Drew Postgraduate Med School, Los Angeles and a member of the fulltime medical staff at King Hospital. He recently completed a fellowship in cardiolog) at Massachusetts General. Charlie was in the Boston area for the past four years also as instructor and clinical and research fellow at Tufts, Boston City and Harvard Med School. He and wife Ima have two children.
Will Dave Birney and lovely Meredith Baxter co-stars of the television show "Bridget Loves Bernie" now going off the air, tie the knot, as some columnists have been speculating might happen, so that our Class can look forward to their company at future reunions? It looks like Dave is not telling. When asked about this by a reporter from "TV Guide," Dave replied: "'m sorry, but I respect her privacy enough so that I won't say any more." Ah, come on Dave, at least you could tell some of your old friends at Sigma Nu or Casque & Gauntlet and they could discreet ly leak the news to this column. At any rate, Miss Baxter did come across on the screen with such charm and warmth that it was easy to understand why Bernie should love Bridget.
John Hinsman has been named an instructor in medicine by Hahnemann Medical College Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Guthrie Clinic Ltd. and Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania. Through an affiliation agreement with the Hospital over 100 Hahnemann medical students will receive part of their clinical training each year in Sayre.
Dr. Hinsman was the chief of Adult Outpatient Medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii from 1969-1972. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Vermont and his internship and internal medicine training at the Robert Packer Hospital. John and his wife Glenda have three children.
Dennis Dinan has been named seventh editor of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Roger Baumberger, a vice president of Marine Midland Bank in New York, has been appointed to the Small Business Administration's New York Advisory Council. Roger also is president of the New York University Business Forum and a member of the Bank Credit Associates of New York, Robert Morris Associates, the New York Credit & Financial Management Association and the Rockville Centre Planning Board. Dick Quinn was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree by John Hopkins. Congratulations to Dennis, Roger, and Dick!
During the summer, Bill Cogswell, Al Rozycki,Skip Bean, and Ford Daley got together in the Hanover area and had a meaningful discussion of what Dartmouth meant to them today and what they thought the class executive committee should be doing. Bill and Al, we think, deserve considerable credit for taking the time to write down their thoughts and send them to Jack Reno, our class president. We wish there were enough space here to reprint their excellent letters. The result of their interest in our Class is that Jack has called an executive committee meeting for some weekend in Hanover this fall when there is a home football game. We'll keep you posted on any developments that might come out of this meeting.
Finally, from across the Atlantic in Paris our man on the scene, Tony Field, writes: "You always complain for lack of news from the '61s. I do think I've done my share considering that I've written at least twice in the past year, and you'll soon probably be wishing you didn't hear from me (not to mention the readers of the column, that is providing I'm not edited out)!
"The Dartmouth Club of France, of which I've been Secretary and President for the past six years, had the great honor and privilege of greeting President and Mrs. Kemeny at a dinner held on May 11th at the Club France-Amerique in Paris. All the members, French and American were very impressed with the Kemenys and proud to have him as President of the College. This was a historic event for the Club.
"I've resigned as President so that I can enjoy the Club meetings, relax, but will continue to interview a few candidates for the Office of Administration (a pleasure since Dartmouth is coed). Still hoping to get back to Hanover for a visit with my women: Gin, wife, and Alexandra, Class of 1990?"
