A compromise reached last month between the New Hampshire Fire Marshal and local officials will permit close to normal use of Leverone Field House, which has been under interdict for several months for gatherings of more than 100 persons. issue has been the synthetic surface installed last year, which is flammable under severe wind-tunnel testing.

Under the agreement, Leverone may be used for athletic events and as an alternate site for Commencement. Still barred concerts or auto or trade shows. Among the stipulations made by the Hanover Fire Chief for larger assemblies are that 1) smoking must be prohibited and exits kept clear and open; 2) the portable Astroturf must be removed and stored or, if it's needed for an event, two firemen must be stationed nearby and proper extinguishers installed: 3) no wheeled vehicles may be refueled in the building; and 4) only noncombustible seating may be used.
