President Kemeny has joined his counterparts at the seven other Ivy League colleges and M.I.T. in a unanimously adopted policy on admissions procedures.
A major change, designed to provide applicants and their secondary school counselors with tentative estimations of their chances for admission, comes under the heading "Early Evaluation Procedure." Under the new system, each candidate, except those applying to Cornell, will be notified between late fall and February 15 that his or her chance of admission is likely, possible, or unlikely or that there is insufficient evidence for an evaluation. The applicant is thereby helped toward a decision about applying elsewhere.
In another change, the Ivy Group and M.I.T. agreed on a common policy to announce no later than December 15 early decisions" for prospective students who commit themselves to a particular college as their first choice and submit applications on that basis by November 1.
Other areas of admissions policy dealt with in the Presidents' agreement were General Procedures, Common Notification Date, Financial Aid, and Common Reply Date.
The common policy, an outgrowth of an intensive review undertaken during the 1971-72 academic year by the nine institutions, goes into effect next September. In their statement, the presidents expressed the hope that "by outlining carefully the procedures under which we are operating and by clearly specifying not only what an applicant's obligations are to us but also what our obligations are to him or her, we can help students pursue their college interests free of unnecessary confusion and pressure."
