The first winner of a scholarship established under a $60,000 bequest from the late Edwin B. Judd '11 is Keith D. Mierez, a sophomore from Hartford, Conn.
Mr. Judd, for 45 years a teacher and administrator in the Hartford public schools, died in 1971 at the age of 82. In his will he specified that the scholarship should be used to aid students from the Hartford area.
A direct lineal descendant of Thomas Judd, one of the original proprietors of Hartford in 1636, Mr. Judd returned to that city to teach in 1913. He became a principal two years later. More than 50,000 students are estimated to have come under his influence during his long service to the local schools.
A leader in the South Congregational Church in Hartford, Mr. Judd had also taught Sunday School for 35 years at the Connecticut State Prison in Weathersfield. In retirement he continued to be active in civic and welfare groups.
Mierez, a native of Trinidad, is a graduate of Weaver High School in Hartford. He won his freshman numerals and last fall his "D" in soccer.
