Organizational Changes Announced for Libraries
MARCH 1973

Organizational changes for the library system at Dartmouth College were announced last month by Vice President Donald L. Kreider.

They involve the designation of the Librarian of the College, Edward Connery Lathem '51, to hold concurrently the title Dean of Libraries, and the creation of the new post of Director of Library Services, to which Adelaide B. Lockhart, formerly Assistant College Librarian for Administrative and Coordinating Services, has been appointed.

"These actions," Vice President Krieder said, "relate to a further strengthening of administrative structure for the libraries, in succession to other adjustments made in the recent past. They also provide more appropriate titular recognition of the responsibilities carried by Mr. Lathem and Miss Lockhart."

Promotions, he said, have also been accorded William B. Meredith and June I. Hicks, previously Assistant College Librarians, who will now be Associate Directors of Library Services.

"Mr. Lathem is the College's chief officer for library administration," Vice President Kreider declared. "All library installations at Dartmouth come under his charge. While he will continue to hold the historic title Librarian of the College, which reaches back in usage here more than two centuries, his newly added title of Dean of Libraries will stress the institution-wide scope of his assignment and better reflect its character as an academic administrative post.

Mr. Lathem, in commenting upon the appointment of Miss Lockhart as Director of Library Services, said that "the action just taken introduces into the library system a position which is, in effect, that of chief operational officer and principal deputy to the Librarian. Miss Lockhart will oversee the implementation of service policies and the enforcement of service standards, and her particular responsibilities will also include the coordination of budget preparation and the exercise of budget control, personnel procurement and employee relations, and attention to equipment, plant and supply needs.

"As Associate Directors of Library Services, Mr. Meredith will have administrative charge of processing, acquisitions, and technical services generally, including automation; and Mrs. Hicks will preside over the public departments of the system and the branch libraries and will supervise all direct services rendered to library patrons."
