Throw the jumping out and it would have been a great meet, at least for Dartmouth.
That's the measure of the NCAA ski meet that saw Jim Page's team finish sixth while the imported jumpers from Norway made the fight for the top spots a dogfight among Colorado, Wyoming, and Vermont.
Colorado overtook the field with its jumpers to retain the title. Dartmouth was in the thick of the fight for three events as Doug Peterson finished third in the cross-country race and then Steve Murphy and Pete Anderson showed well in the slalom.
Dartmouth stood in fourth place entering the jumping but, as Page noted, "There was no way we could compete with the imported jumpers."
It was much the same story in the Eastern championship which, like the NCAA meet, was held at Middlebury. A disappointing showing in the downhill proved costly and the Green could never get back into contention, finishing third to Vermont and New Hampshire.
