We've been writing about Dartmouth's frosh runners and the mark they ve made this winter and the story is the same as the spring season begins.

The Green took an 8-1 dual meet record to the Heptagonal Meet at Cornell and came away with 12 points and a sixth-place tie with Princeton.

The surprise of the Heps competition was Rich Nichols, the freshman from New Bedford, Mass., who set a Dartmouth record while taking third place in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:10.9.

Then there are the sprinters, Rich Berryman and Greg Payne, who as Coach Ken Weinbel observed, " ... proved that they belong."

Berryman was second in the 60-yard dash at the Heps with a time of 6.2 seconds. He and Payne were clearly competitive later on in the NCAA meet in Detroit even though neither reached the finals.

"What great experience for freshmen," said Weinbel after the NCAA meet. "It can only help them during the coming years."

Nichols beat the Heptagonal champ, Harvard's Nick Leone, in the trials of the 600 at Detroit but neither qualified for the final.

Dartmouth's other leaders in the championship meets were shotputter Mike Shiaras, the co-captain who was fourth in the Heps action, and a sixth-place effort for both the mile- and two-mile relay teams.
