Made possible in part by a donation from the Class of 1935, the Hopkins Center Art Galleries have acquired six photographs by Walker Evans, who was artist in residence at Dartmouth for the fall term. The acquisitions include several striking photographs made of sharecroppers and their environment in Alabama in the mid-30s, as well as one of Trinity Church in nearby Cornish, N.H.
Given in memory of deceased classmates, the 1935 donation to Hopkins Center has been made annually since 1964 to support special events and projects, including several gallery exhibitions. This is the first year the funds have been expended for works of art. To mark the '35 gift, the Galleries have had produced a special offset reproduction of one of the most memorable of the Walker Evans photographs (shown with this article).
