At the general meeting of Dartmouth class officers in Webster Hall on Friday evening, May 4, two of the College's outstanding graduates, one a class bequest chairman and one a class president, were honored by the Dartmouth Alumni Council with its highest tribute, the Dartmouth Alumni Award. Josiah Stevenson IV '57, the Council's vice president, made the presentations to Robert L. Manegold '38 of Milwaukee, Wis., and Bertram R. MacMannis '39 of Darien, Conn. He presented each with a small silver replica of the Eleazar Wheelock Bowl, and read the following citations:
ROBERT LOUIS MANEGOLD '38
"Wehr Corporation, a Growing Complex, is the Product of Robert Manegold." So reads a four-column headline in an issue of TheMilwaukee Journal of a few years ago. Who knows? A few years hence a TV commercial may tell about "the Wehr that made Milwaukee famous."
Your success in building this industrial complex is but one of the reasons you were named chairman of the Governor's Committee on Special Learning, vice-chairman of the Governor's Committee on Economic Development, and a member of the Governor's Committee on Judicial Organization. You are chairman of the Advisory Council of the School of Business Administration of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, a trustee and co-founder of the University Lake School, and a trustee of the Greater Milwaukee Committee and Planned Parenthood of Southeast Wisconsin.
In the business world you are a member of the board and of the executive committee of Bath Industries, First Wisconsin Trust Company, Employers Mutual of Wausau, and Western Publishing Company. Since 1970 you have been Chairman of Wehr Corporation.
Dartmouth has been blessed with the support of alumni like you without whom the College would not continue to progress. You have been a class agent and an active worker in enrollment. You were a member of the Major Gifts Committee of the Third Century Fund and are Bequest Chairman for your Class. From 1965 to 1969 you were a member of the Alumni Council. The presence in Hanover of your son Rob as a member of the Class of '75 adds distinction to your impressive record of service to the College.
In grateful recognition of your loyalty and continuing service to the College, it is an honor to give you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
BERTRAM ROBERTS MACMANNIS'39
In Mamaroneck you were advertising manager of your school yearbook and a member of the track team. Forty years later you are still in the advertising and publishing business, but let none conclude that you are a one-track man.
You got a fast start with the Navy in the Pacific where you won battle stars for the Iwo Jima and Tokyo strikes, for attacks on Okinawa and the Japanese homeland, and for the liberation of the Philippines. You continued your interest in things nautical, becoming Commander of the Aviation Commandery, Naval Order of the United States.
After Navy service you went into space and, while promoting the sale of national advertising in Glamour, House and Garden, Holiday and This Week, you came to recognize the growing importance of an affluent and discriminating audience of six million college students. When Reader's Digest purchased National Educational Advertising Service you became General Manager and now these readers digest more stuff about useful products and services from a broader scope of advertisers than ever before. Being a one-track man is not all bad, provided the man and the track are fast enough. You are and it was.
While soaring in space you found time to serve your community as vice-chairman of the American Red Cross and on the boards of the Stamford Hospital, the Low Heywood School and your church. You have been active in Dartmouth affairs since graduation. You were class agent for seven years, collecting Fund honors and much more than the sand dollars you like to pick up on the beaches. You have been Class President since 1964, and in 1969 you were named the Class President of the Year. Other honors include vice-president and president of the Class Presidents Association and president of the Dartmouth Club of Darien-Norwalk. You did an outstanding job as chairman of your twenty-fifth reunion and as a member of the Third Century Fund local executive committee, and for many years you have worked in enrollment.
Your community, your Class and the College are grateful for your leadership, and in lasting appreciation of your achievements and continuing loyalty it is an honor to give you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
