JULY 1973 JACK DEGANGE

Jim Myers, a junior from Palm Beach, Fla., is the new tennis captain and will be defending champion in the New England "C" Division singles next spring. His father, James Myers '50, was Dartmouth's top singles player in 1949 and 1950.

The Green finished with a 10-10 record and placed third among 25 teams in the New England tournament.

The freshman heavyweights were the highlight of the crew season as they finished third in the intercollegiate championships at Syracuse in early June. That performance came in the wake of an Eastern championship showing in early May and offers an indicator that Coach Peter Gardner should have the talent for a capable varsity shell next spring.

Among the varsity oarsmen, the standouts were Bob Stevens from Lexington, Mass., and Brad Little from Hanover, N.H., who rowed as a pair in the inter- collegiate championship and finished third.

The new captains of crew will be Bill Landmesser from Loudonville, N.Y., who succeeds Little as the lightweight leader, and Kurt Stege from Madison, Wis., who replaces Charlie Arnold from Surrey, England, as the heavyweight captain.

You'll recall that Dartmouth's facilities and the Connecticut River were used last July for selection of the United States Olympic crew. The same facilities will be used again this month as the U.S. national crew is selected to participate in the world championships at Leningrad in late August. Gardner will serve as manager of the national crew.

Pitching and clutch hitting were the prime ingredients that produced an 11-5 record in freshman baseball. Jim Beattie from South Portland, Me., was the pitching mainstay (6- 2) and also hit a .556 (10-18) while outfielder Steve McNutt led the regular hitters with a .393 average and drove in eight runs.

Goalie Bert Keirstead from Simsbury, Conn., stopped 68 per cent of the shots on goal (including 53 saves while allowing only 13 goals in the final three games) to pace the frosh lacrosse team to a 5-4 record. Attackman Rich Auletta from Franklin Square, N.Y., was the frosh scoring leader with 32 points including 16 goals.

The frosh tennis team used 5-4 wins over both Deerfield and Andover in posting a 5-3 record this spring. Dave Lockard from Philadelphia, Pa., had a 5-2 record in singles for the Green frosh and shared in a 5-1 doubles record.

In freshman golf, Dartmouth compiled a 2-2 record, while in jayvee track the Green showed a 2-1 mark this spring.

On the distaff side, Dartmouth's women's tennis team produced the only perfect record this spring, finishing with an 8-4 win over St. Paul's School that capped a 4-0 season.

Ann Fritz from Lutherville, Md., and Anne Rasmussen from Rye, N.Y., combined as the lead doubles team and also played the top singles positions.

In women's lacrosse, Dartmouth showed a 2-2 record. After winning the first two matches, the Green fell to New Hampshire and St. Paul's. Hallie Marshall from West Chester, Pa., was the Green scoring leader in the final games and had scoring assistance during the season from Elise Erler and Brewer Doran.
