It would be inappropriate to pass this football season without a reference to Dartmouth's varsity reserves who wrapped up an undefeated season with a 22-7 win at Yale.

"The jayvees are such an important part of our program," said Bob Blackman. "They work as hard as the regulars but generally receive little recognition."

The reserves swept past Army (7-6), Princeton (27-19), Harvard (23-20) and Yale (22-7) to win the unofficial "Big Four" jayvee championship for the first time.

In the process, they came from a 200 halftime deficit to topple the Crimson reserves. That was a great performance for sophomore fullback Steve Webster who carried 13 times for 107 yards in the worst possible playing conditions (the game was played in a steady rain) and scored two of the comeback touchdowns on runs of 22 and 38 yards.

It was a 24-yard field goal by defensive back Dale Pope (who had missed an earlier conversion attempt) that decided the Harvard duel.

The next week at Yale, the Indians spotted Yale the first score and then retaliated behind another sophomore, Steve Whitehead, who had been Webster's chief collaborator at Harvard. Whitehead had 87 yards and a touchdown at Yale while Webster also scored again and ran for 86 yards.
