Two Charter Trustees Retire
JULY 1973

The Commencement meeting of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees brought to a close a combined total of 34 years of service on the Board by two of the College's Charter Trustees – Lloyd D. Brace '25 and William E. Buchanan '24.

Resolutions of appreciation and of praise for their work for Dartmouth College over the years were passed by the Board, and each was presented with a copy of Paul Sample's painting of the campus which has become a traditional farewell gift from the Board to its retiring members.

Mr, Brace joined the Board 22 years ago as Alumni Trustee. After one five-year term, he was elected a Life Trustee (now Charter Trustee) in 1956. Former president of the First National Bank of Boston, he headed the Trustee Committee on Investments as well as the Executive Committee, and when, in 1967, the Board departed from the past practice of having the President of the College automatically serve as Chairman of the Board, Mr. Brace was elected to that position. As chairman, he headed the search for Dartmouth's 13th president.

Mr. Buchanan, after serving on the Alumni Council, was elected an Alumni Trustee in 1961 and in 1970 became a Charter Trustee. Former president and chairman of the Appleton Wire Works Corporation of Appleton, Wis., he was a member of several Trustee committees but was particularly active with the Committee on the Budget and the Committee on Alumni and Public Affairs. He was a Trustee member of the Dartmouth Campus Conference and assumed the national chairmanship of the Third Century Fund campaign upon the death of Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28.

Both Mr. Brace and Mr. Buchanan served as Trustees during one of the most eventful periods in Dartmouth's history – years in which major decisions were made about the Hopkins Center, graduate programs, the Medical School, programs for the disadvantaged, reorganization of the Board of Trustees, and, most recently, coeducation and year-round operation.
