THE beginning of the 205th academic year. Facts and observations: the largest freshman class ever, 1,062 men and women (268 of the latter), including Christopher W. Legge, the great-great-great-great grandson of the second Earl of Dartmouth; also including one of the shortest drop-outs on record - young man arrives in Hanover, takes one look, takes bus back to Washington, mother meets bus, sends son packing back to Hanover, here to stay. Freshman trip also largest ever, with 600 hikers, cyclists, anglers cruising about the countryside. Many (some say upwards of 1,000) upperclassmen back a week early, cruising about the countryside. Why? Some say they like it here. Convocation: faculty in robes, students in varying degrees of dress, including dresses. Dean of Freshman, Professor of English, two lesser mortals cheer Al Kaline's 3,000 th hit. Campus very green.
