A hearty welcome to our new secretary, Arthur T. Winship, 43 Deering St., Reading, Mass. 01867. Do make it a real welcome by writing Windy frequently, or even telephoning him at (617) 944-2951.
A letter from our bequest chairman, DonCheney, brings the news that the College has received a bequest of $2,000 from the estate of our late, beloved classmate, Clyde Locke. His bequest has been used to establish a permanent endowment fund for Dartmouth in his name with the annual revenue going to the Alumni Fund and credited to our class. This is another fine example of how the Estate Planning Program is supporting the future strength of the College.
Our class still has several seasoned travelers - the latest to be heard from are Dutch Water-bury who took a Smithsonian Tour in central Connecticut in October via Amtrak and visited - the Yale Art Gallery and the homes of Mark Twain and Julia Ward Howe; John Learoyd drove all the way from Boston to Hanover for the Harvard game (reversing the route of that never-forgotten pilgrimage of 67 years ago.
A couple more items from Hanover in case you missed them. No more big bonfires - not another edict, simply old railroad ties are becoming impossible to obtain. Also, a library book, John Bright on America - 67 years overdue - has just been returned to the Library. Could that book possibly have been borrowed by some scholarly but unnamed freshman in the year of 1907? If so, he had better not confess because the late fines, if assessed, would total $1,234.29.
ROTC. The comprehensive study of the special ROTC Committee was reported in detail in the September 27 Bulletin. Did you notice that it contained an invitation to everybody, especially alumni, to send in written comments to the committee of which the chairman is Gene M. Lyons, professor of government, 214 Silsby Hall, Hanover? If you have not acted on that invitation, it is not too late - there is still ample time before the winter meeting of the Trustees early in 1975 if you write to Gene Lyons on or before the end of December. Our class has been on record on this subject but that record most likely will be lost and nullified if very many classmates now remain silent and do not answer the invitation.
These notes are being written on November 1 for the December Alumni Magazine which you will receive some time before the end of the year so the executive committee takes this opportunity to express the hope that the Christmas Season and the New Year will be extra good to all classmates, wives, widows, sons, and daughters whereverthey are. As Jim Malley wrote a year ago "Keep well and smiling."
