New Bradley Professor
December 1974

James F. Hornig, Professor of Chemistry and Dean of Graduate Studies, has been named to the Albert Bradley Third Professorship, one of five endowed chairs which carry extra stipends to underwrite the development of innovative research and teaching methods.

Professor Hornig will be the second incumbent in the Bradley Professorship, succeeding President Kemeny, who relinquished the chair in 1972 when the demands of his administrative duties prevented further pursuit of his special teaching project.

As the Third Century Professor in the sciences, Professor Hornig plans interdisciplinary teaching and research in scientific areas that he hopes will contribute to the solution of problems of urgent social concern. His first efforts, he said, will focus on issues of energy and environmental degradation.

He will resign July 1 from his positions as Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Dean of the Faculty for Sciences, which he has held since 1964 as well, in order to concentrate on his project.
