Can you imagine the State Department without George Springteen? H. Kissinger could't and why he picked George to become his special assistant as well as executive secretary of the State Department. Nice move up for George who has been a Deputy Assistant Sectrelary of State since 1966'
Dave Sanders has started a new venture in Boston (along with John U. Harris '53) called IMF Services, Inc. - Insured Mutual Funds. Dave describes it: "We have the exclusive distributorship for an insurance policy which protects Mutual Fund shareholders from longterm loss in their investments. This is the first guarantee against loss on an equity product ever offered to American investors." Dave and John first met on a Dartmouth Club - sponsored trip to Copenhagen two years ago.
I trust you caught the "Rouse for ..." item in the January issue noting that Joe Vancisin had been named president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. When his Yalies beat Cornell in January it marked Joe's 200 th victory as Eli coach.
Rousing, too, was the selection last spring of Claude Shuchter "Man of the Year" in Buffalo by none other than Buffalo magzine. Claude is president and chairman of the board of the Manufacturers and Traders Trust Co. and president of the Buffalo Downtown Development Corp.
Harry Schoenhut has moved from Virginia to Henderson, N.C., in order to be nearer to his hosiery mills. He joined Durham Hosiery in 1966 as general manager and has since become a vice president, secretary to the Board of Directors, and a member of the Board. The Durham plant was moved to Franklinton in 1969 and the Danville Knitting Mills purchased this past January. But the purchase and rennovation of a cottage on a nearby lake has been his and Dot's great love, according to Harry.
Reading The New York Times on a recent Sunday, the names of Joe Goldstein (for his new book) and Jack Riley (for his All American Sports Hockey Camp) leapt out at me in the space of a few minutes. And doing some leaping of his own on the hockey front is Jack's son Mark who is a sophomore regular for Boston College.
And not surprising, Hanover High has been battling it out for a state championship thanks to Bob McLaughry's Bob, who is the goalie, and Fred Daley's twins, Geoff, who is center and captain, and Rich who plays left defense. Young Bob McL. is also the alternate captain.
Speaking of Fred, the first recipient of the Frederick M. Daley 1919 Scholarship at Dartmouth was announced last fall. The scholarship was set up by Fred's father in 1971 shortly before he died.
Perkins-Goodwin paper in Chicago has promoted Homer Bogart from vice president in charge of midwestern paper sales to vice president and general manager of the Paper Division and elected him to the Board of Directors.
Shivering midst our timbers in N.H. led BobSmith (N.H. Division of Welfare in Keene) to his archives and he came up with a 1942 photo of Tom Close, bundled up like an Eskimo in his fraternity room trying to keep warm while studying. "I wonder how many remember the fuel shortage in the fall of 1942," wonders Bob. (Sorry, the picture is too dark to use.)
A thought for this week: how many '44s are sporting mustaches these days? And how many did 10 years ago? One who is now is MerleHagen, professor of business administration at New England College, just back from a month in Europe where he skied a lot of the big ones. That alpine air must be the answer because Merle's upper lip makes Jason Robards look like a teenager.
Dr. Monte Du Val is back at the University of Arizona as vice president for health sciences after notable service as secretary for health and scientific affairs at HEW. Not only that, he has recently accepted appointment as chairman of the newly constituted Dartmouth Medical School board of overseers.
Finally, in the Department-of-Piddling-Research I have come up with the following insignificant information: Dick Howe lives on Dartmouth Street in Beverly, Mass.; Jim Johnson lives on Dartmoor St. in Ann Arbor; JaDensmore lives on Hanover St. in Lebanon; WillPartridge lives in Hanover, Mass.; Norm Simpson lives on Hampshire Road in Syracuse; WaltOlin lives on South Ivy Street in Denver; and John Sterling lives on Indian Mound Road in Birmingham, Mich. Doesn't all that grab you? That's it. Blessings.
