Sad to start the New Year on a tragic note. Dr. Ward Weimar was killed November 24, 1970, when struck by a car in front of his Long Island home. An obituary appears in the back of this or a subsequent issue.
Donning the buckle boots for the ski season is Del Jackson and family (he's an orthodontist in Wellesley, Mass.). They have a condominium in Waterville Valley, N. H., and will also test out Aspen later in the season. Schussing right behind are Mickey Smith (investments) and RogFeldman (aircraft cleaning and maintenance). Mickey and family skied out of the Hanover Inn over New Years, rendezvouing with Rog and his group which has rented a house in Woodstock for the whole season.
Al Myers (Bache & Company stockbroker) reports that his son chose Harvard over Dartmouth because three of his high school classmates were also accepted by the Crimson. Between squash matches' with Stan Barr and Rog Feldman, Al spends a lot of his spare time persuading Massachusetts football players that they should be running and blocking for the Big Green. Fritz Witzel (wool felt manufacturer in Wellesley, Mass.) is on the go, having bought a second company this past year. His third son is a freshman at Brandeis.
A most welcome phone call at two a.m. from "Buffie" C. Hills, holed up in some mid-western motel with a business associate (male) and insisting that they were playing gin rummy. I have yet to face my three neighbors who are on our four-party line.
Our Men Overseas include Art Scharf (oil business) who is soon to forsake gay Paree for you-name-it Cairo. Art has a step-daughter at Reed College, a step-son at Colorado Aerotech and two sons at Portland City College, while 11-year-old Veronica travels foreign climes with her parents. Also in oil as a geologist is SydBowers, whose camel is tied to a tent in Saudi Arabia. Syd reports a recent cholera epidemic in that country; extensive trips to Lebanon and Egypt; and a jaunt back in the States next summer. Cy Thompson (Rank-Zerox in Zurich) keeps busy in his off hours as Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Switzerland and encouraging greater participation by the business community in local welfare and cultural activities. His son Noel is in the Class of 1974.
Closer by we have Ed Bailey (advertising and writing) out of Hudson Heights, Quebec, with his three children in local schools. Ed has been in Canada for 12 years, gets back to Hanover each fall for a football game and will check on the geese in Florida this winter. Don Dunbar is an associate professor of psychology at Mount Allison College in New Brunswick, Canada. Says that most of his spare time is spent restoring a 100-acre farm he bought a while ago. Writing of the beauty of the country, he says that a few years back visitors were asking: "How can you stand it here? So quiet, so little to do." Now the question is: "Do you know of any land around here for sale?" Don and his father, Class of 1913, got down to Hanover over the Christmas holidays.
And closer still, in Framingham, Mass., to be exact, Bob Hawkins continues as production manager of the Dennison Mfg. Co. He has son Brad at Springfield College, daughter Marsha at Northeastern and a second son finishing up this year at Framingham South high school.
A new address (Ray town, Mo.) for pediatrician "Suds" Suddarth, and a new hobby—greenhousing. He's been his own architect, decorator, and handyman in the project and hopes soon to have those tomatoes growing all year 'round. And speaking of Suds: Frank Parker is still pushing that bubbly stuff for Anheuser- Busch in Clifton, N. J. He has one daughter in graduate school, one at the U. of Colorado and then three more children at various stages of high and elementary school. Golf, sailing, and fishing occupy the weekends.
Jay McMullen, producer of CBS New Hour, is on a year's leave of absence as a "Visiting Distinguished Professor" at San Diego State College, doing what most would like to do: "Enjoying a year off from the NYC rat-race to teach, travel, write, and fill up the well." He'll be back at CBS news at the end of June 1971.
Jack Adams has gone from Volkswagens to Volvos and from Missouri to Arlington Heights, Ill., where he is assistant regional manager, Midwest Region, Volvo Distributing, Inc. Of his eight kids, three have gone to Southeast Missouri State College; and the other five range in age from 18 to 11, and are in local schools. Hal Cannon (insurance) has moved from Cincinnati to Louisville, Ky.
Hit by the Boeing layoff in Washington is Gil Anthony, and he is now working for a nurseries and orchards company, especially interested in tree farming and landscape gardening. His oldest son is a senior at the University of Washington, where his daughter is a freshman, and his second son is a sophomore at Dartmouth.
And speaking of '44 sons at Dartmouth, my records show that there are currently three members of the Class with two boys here at the same time. They are: NormanMcWilliams' Gordon '71 and Kenneth '73;Dick Sholl's John '71 and Richard '73; and Don Davidson's Kenneth '71 and Peter '74. Over the years, other "double-headers" have included: Gus Pratt's Augustus '66 and Phillip '69; Don Pfeifle's Peter '68 and John '71; Jack Jenness' John '70 and Thornton '71; Art Saul's Arthur '69 and Richard '73; and Phil Penberthy's Philip '70 and John '74.
One reason Dartmouth may have lost its hockey opener to Harvard in early December was that Jack Riley's son, Jay, was a sophomore member of the Harvard squad.
Sad to report that two members of the Class, apparently disenchanted with Dartmouth's performance last spring after Kent State and Cambodia, have asked that their names be removed permanently from the College and Class rolls. They are BobTompa, Chairman of Business Administration, Monmouth College in N. J., and Ralph Beaman, with DuPont in Wilmington, Del.
