Happy New Year all Twoters.

In these provincial class notes, maybe because our California classmates live on the far side of the Connecticut River, the Golden Staters rarely receive the salutations they justly deserve. Yet Howie Almon, Parker Huntington, JimJodie, Parker Meade, Jim Moody, Buck Perry,Ralph Rubins and Jack Thornton are never forgotten in the Class of '22.

That's why it is extremely pleasing to have an update on Jim Moody who has lived in the number one population state for more than 40 years.

Chick Hopkins writes in part:

"Jim and his wife Margaret visited Mexico twice when I lived there. He has been to about every place in the world. Before we went to the Scandinavian countries in 1973 he gave us the highlights that should be included. He likewise gave me many good tips before a trip to Japan. Jim is also a gourmet cook. His wife is a former teacher and they delight in travel. Jim had and has many good friends throughout the Class. I count myself among them and others who immediately come to mind include Bob Booth, Doc Colton, Ossie Holland, Bill Mann, Pop Orth,Loosh Sherman, Jack Taylor, Zeke Shoup, to mention only a few."

In addition, thanks to Spenny Smith here are some excerpts from a letter Jim wrote to him:

"Our home in Carmel is about half a mile from the Pacific Ocean where Margaret and I frequently walk the beaches looking for sea otters, cormorants, etc. Margaret is an avid birder and we also spend many hours hiking with the Sierra Club and the Audubon Club.

"Last August and September we toured Northern California, Oregon, Idaho, and climbed the mountains of British Columbia and Alberta. Never, never was the scenery more beautiful.

"The Glacier snowmobiles urged us to tour in them; the bike boats begged us to pedal them. We even discovered a new language - in front of a lakeside shop in Alberta we read a large printed sign, 'FISHING IS SPOKEN HERE."

"Fossils and obsidian we dug up in Oregon. We also spent hours in the Government Forest Fire Stations where we watched the young fire fighters learn to parachute. They wear Nomex suits which are fireproof. We learned how to mend ripped parachutes.

"Our friends from all over the world constantly knock at our door in Carmel. December we are having a noted professor from Cámbridge, England, to visit and teach us about dugongs and whales. Another friend from Victoria, British Columbia, will also be with us. And still other friends who have put us up man) times in their homes in New Zealand just wrote to say they hope to see Carmel soon. In our Moody Motel our guests have to help me was the dishes and make their own beds."

Now what fool claims there is no fun in life after 70? Wonderful to hear of your gusto, Jim. Motions will soon be forthcoming to have our 55th Reunion in delightfully picturesque Carmel. In the Dartmouth fellowship there are no space gaps.

Two class grandsons graduated from Dartmouth last June. Douglas S. Jones is grandson of our departed classmate Clinton S. Jones and his wife Eleanor. She attended Commencement and saw Douglas receive his degree cum laude with distinction in his government major. He is now attending Indiana Law School. William P. Suttmeier is grandson of our Chris and Harriet Suttmeier who were also happily in Hanover at graduation. William is now at Thayer School. Richard P. Suttmeier "63 is now a professor at Hamilton College and these notes will have much more to say about his distinction before the snow melts in Hanover.

Professor Emeritus Herbert F. West, our classmate, who for more than 40 years was a remarkably popular teacher with Dartmouth students, has passed away. As you sadly noted, his obituary appeared last month.

The New Year naturally incites thoughts about the future - yours and your college. Our Class Bequest Chairmen, Gene Hotchkiss andIke Miller will gladly answer any questions you may have.
