"DARTMOUTH, NOV. 16, END OF THE WALL" blazed the huge sign on the Berlin Wall. Under the heading "History is made and Dartmouth is there," The Dartmouth Fortnightly of January 12 tells the story, though, understandably, without the 1922 connection. A paraphrase:
Zia Daniell '91 (Exeter, N.H.) and six other Dartmouth students were in West Berlin on excursion from foreign study terms. She said, "People really seemed ecstatic about everything that was going on. Two German guys stopped us and asked if we wanted their spray paint. We said 'sure' and they handed us orange and bright green paint; then we argued for 20 minutes about what to write. We were also in Wenceslas Square, Prague, the night people were beaten by the police. When we heard foreigners were being arrested, we didn't hang around."
By telephone, Zia now back at Dartmouth, says she majors in geography modified with environmental studies, she plays on the women's squash team, and she enjoys living in Tri-Delt sorority.
But, most importantly to 1922, Zia is a granddaughter of our Warren Daniell. Her father is Samuel H. Daniell '52 and her brothers are Dr. Christopher '76 and Stephen '79. She also has many other distinguished Dartmouth relatives. But even if she had no Dartmouth lineage, '22 would be delighted to adopt Zia if she'd only agree. Most sorrowfully, classmates VanVleckHempstead Vosburgh died January 9 and John Grosvenor Dana, January 28. Obituaries will follow.
