How many of you can say that you watched your old college roommate receive an award on network television? I can! On January 25th, there I was viewing the annual "Golden Globe Awards" (presented by the press correspondents of Hollywood) when up in front of the cameras there was Matt Rapf accepting the award for best TV drama series of 1975. As we all know, Matt is executive producer of "Kojak" and he is to be congratulated for putting together such a fine dramatic series.

To be perfectly honest, my attention was divided between the TV that night of Matt's award and reading Dave Sargent's book, StockMarket Profits And Higher Income For You (Simon and Schuster, 1975, 285 pp. $8.95). After reading the review of his book in a recent ALUMNI MAGAZINE I went out and spent $8.95 to see if Dave could produce some higher income for me. There is only one obstacle, one that I've heard mentioned many times before, that in order to make money, you need money to start with. Once I can jump that hurdle, and buy up hundreds of shares of IBM, and some other issues that Dave likes so much, then I can exercise the patience that he insists is so important when you are in the market... only then can I sit back and enjoy all the higher income. Seriously, Dave has written a very readable and understandable book about a very complex and confusing subject (complex and confusing to me, I mean).

News from Lexington, Ky.: John D. Wright Jr., professor of history at Transylvania University, was awarded the Transylvania Medal, the highest award given to a non-alumnus, by the Alumni Association in recognition of his outstanding service. John was originally from Brookline, Mass., and after his graduation in 1942 served as an officer in the U.S. Navy until 1945. Following his release from service, he entered graduate school at Columbia University and earned the M.A. and Ph.D. in American History. He joined the Transylvania faculty in 1950 and since has engaged in various research activities in addition to teaching. He has had articles published in several professional journals and periodicals. John has served Transylvania as chairman of the Division of Social Studies, and later as chairman of the Department of History and Political Science.

The price of reading classmates' books goes up $1.00. I see Art Cox has written a book, TheMyths of National Security: The Peril of SecretGovernment (Beacon, 1975, 231 pp. $9.95). The review of his book appeared in the January issue of the Magazine and I'm off to see if my friendly neighborhood bookstore has it in stock.

It is my sad task to report the death of Wilmer H. Martin, who died in April, 1973... The obituary appears elsewhere in this Magazine, and I am sorry that we had so little information. Our only sources were the Aegis and the 25th Reunion book of 1967.

In about two weeks from now the college's Alumni Fund Campaign for 1976 will officially begin its annual three-month drive, ending June 30. In the first four columns that I've written as class secretary you might have gotten the message that I've been haunted by the statistics that we '42s have been compiling in recent Alumni Fund campaigns. The stats have haunted me for a long time (that is, me and all your class officers combined), and without fear of being repititious of a letter from Pres. Krefer I want to haunt you with these same facts and figures. Of course, our mission is to change the direction of our downward slide in the Green Derby standings. Don't you remember how great we were from 1953 to 1966? There was not another class in the history of the Dartmouth Alumni Fund who ever won 12 Green Derbies in a 14-year stretch, including six consecutive victories! Look at this record:

Green Derby Number of finish Contributors 1953 .... 1st .... 432 1954 .... 1st .... 452 1955 .... 1st .... 452 1956 .... 1st .... 463 1957 .... 1st .... 474 1958 .... 1st .... 528 1959 .... 2nd .... 415 1960 .... 1st .... 486 1961 .... 1st .... 482 1962 .... 1st .... 472 1963 .... 3rd .... 458 1964 .... 1st .... 478 1965 .... 1st .... 470 1966 .... 1st .... 458

Now, take a look at our slide downhill in the last ten years:

1968 .... 2nd .... 404 1969 .... 7th .... 351 1970 .... 3rd .... 350 1971 .... 3rd .... 363 1973 .... 4th .... 338 1974 .... 5th .... 369 1975 .... 6th .... 332

The Green Derby is a lot more than just another contest between classes. It is a clear and convincing piece of evidence of class unity, class purpose, as well as the obvious class support of her alma mater. Why can't we show some of our old unity, purpose, and support... win another Green Derby... and, once again, be called "The Great Class of '42"?!
