The annual address list of Dartmouth College Alumni Officers reveals that a steadily increasing number of classmates are very much involved in alumni affairs. Leading the list is Tom Hannan, an elected representative to the Alumni Council from Region VII covering the western states. Tom serves on the Alumni Council's committee on enrollment and admissions. Under the aegis of this committee are the area and district enrollment directors who are responsible for enrollment work and interviewing of applicants throughout the country. Dick Davidson is the district enrollment director for Southern New Jersey and Dave Haight is the D.E.D. in the Tulsa, Oklahoma, district.
The address list indicates that a surprisingly large number of classmates are now serving as officers in the many alumni associations and clubs throughout the country and abroad. We have nine club presidents including Roger Stephenson of the Hartford Alumni Association, Mike Daley of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Maine; Dave Sloper of the Dartmouth Club of Maryland; Hal Harris of the Pioneer Valley Dartmouth Club, Holyoke-Greenfield, Mass.; James V. Graham II of the Worcester, Mass., Club: Henry Weiss of the Bergen County Club in New Jersey; Allan Click who doubles as president and job placement chairman of the Westchester County Club in New York; Eric Anderson who does the same for the Brattleboro, Vt., Club; and Mai Churchill of the Dartmouth College Club of the Philippines. Tom Torinus' father, editor of The Post-Crescent, a well-known newspaper in the Milwaukee area, has mixed emotions over losing Tom as his right hand man while gaining another editor in the family. Tom left his position as editorial page editor of The Post-Crescent to become editor of the Menominee(Mich-) Herald-Leader. Tom and his brother purchased controlling interest in the corporation owning that paper, and Tom is now the operating head of the newspaper and president of the corporation. After graduation from Dartmouth, Tom started his career as a reporter on The Post-Crescent. He soon became an assistant to the general manager of the New YorkDaily News. In 1964 he returned to Wisconsin as business manager of Post Corporation which had recently acquired several weekly newspapers in the Milwaukee area. He later served as bureau chief of the Oshkosh office of The Post-Crescent and was a special assignments reporter on the Appleton staff. In 1969 Tom organized a news staff for WLUKTV, a Green Bay television station owned by Post Corporation. Tom has been active in community activities, serving as a director of the Appleton Area Chamber of Commerce and chairman of its state legislative committee.
Those of you in the Cleveland area could not have missed the half page article devoted exclusively to the athletic accomplishments of Jack Herrick in the December 7 issue of TheSunday Plain Dealer written by Hal Lebovitz, the sports editor. Jack is one class jock who seems to have improved his athletic prowess with age. According to Hal, Jack is the one "amateur athlete in this town who probably works harder than the highest-paid pro and, as a consequence, has become so good he has run out of competition." Jack is the Ohio amateur squash champion and has not lost a single game in two years. He is unquestionably the number one squash player in Cleveland, a postion he held at Dartmouth his senior year. Although an avid tennis player from the age of eight years, Jack had never played squash until his freshman year at Dartmouth. His secret to success entails a rigorous "self-inflicted" conditioning schedule involving a series of nine exercises. In addition to the usual series of sit-ups, push-ups, jogging and jumping jack7, the program includes a "penny drill" where Jack moves pennies from one corner to the opposite corner of a room, moving constantly at top speed. Consequently, Jack has one of the lowest pulse-rates that his doctor has ever recorded, second only to Jack Tatum. Jack practices law with a Cleveland firm and is president of two real estate companies and the Sheriff Cold Storage Company. He and his family live in Shaker Heights. Our thanks to Lee Chikote '30 for sending the article on Jack.
