A near disaster almost prevented these notes from being written. Since my copy was overdue, I decided to take my material with me on an over-night business trip to New York City hoping that I might find a few moments to work on the notes. Upon returning to my hotel room in the evening, I noticed that my suitcase was unlatched, although I did not recall opening it after my arrival at the hotel. A few minutes later I discovered to my horror that my briefcase was missing!! The only items in that briefcase were all of my hand-written notes, press clippings, notes, and material from Class Officers Weekend, my class address list and worst of all my Freshman Green Book which is an essential source of reference for your class secretary. I searched the entire room and even found an old pair of shoes under the bed, but alas, no briefcase. Realizing that my room had been burglarized, and desperate over my loss, I alterted the hotel authorities. After much further searching, a shrewd security officer discovered the briefcase with contents intact abandoned in a nearby fire exit.
Getting back to more pleasant topics, Class Officers Weekend was a most delightful occasion for Alice and myself. Also in attendance were Seth and Kathy Strickland, Phil and MaryLou Kron, and Gene Kohn. Judy couldn't make this trip. In addition to the various meetings, banquets, parties, and receptions, the weekend featured a very informative discussion of the Dartmouth Plan and provocative comments by President Kemeny concerning his five-year report followed by a question and answer session. The report is must reading for all alumni. On Friday evening some of the more talented students and faculty at Dartmouth presented a potpourri of muscial and dramatic excerpts from performances presented during the past year at Hopkins Center. I had not been fully aware of the depth and extraordinary quality of the talent continuously performing at the Hopkins Center.
While in Hanover for Class Officers Weekend, I was surprised to receive a long-distance call from Roger Wolf whom I have not seen for almost nine years. I first thought Rog was calling from Tucson, Arizona, but it turned out that he had stopped in Rochester to visit Doug and Jean Whitney on his way to Syracuse to evaluate a legal aid program for the OEO Legal Services. Roger is a partner in the law firm of Risner, Wolf & Raven in Tucson and engages in general practice with particular emphasis on criminal matters. He handles a number of dope cases along with environmental and civil liberties matters. I also spoke with Doug Whitney whom I have not seen since our Fifth Reunion. Doug has his own general law practice in Fairport, N.Y., and operates behind the scenes in local politics. Recently he has been quite involved with health care and prepaid systems. Doug and Jean have three daughters, Susan, age 8, Sarah, age 5½, and Ann, age 2.
Frequently the wives get as involved with local Dartmouth affairs, or even more so, than do their husbands. Barbara Parish and AliceMcCarter have both recently been elected to the board of directors of the Dartmouth Women's Club of Boston. This organization is open to women whose husbands, brothers, sisters, sons, or daughters have attended or graduated from Dartmouth. One of its main objectives is to raise $1,000 each year toward a scholarship fund for Dartmouth. Carol Eveleth has previously served as a member of the board.
Herbert Millington was recently appointed director of financial administration for the Philip Morris Industrial chemical group, one of five operating companies of Philip Morris, Incorporated. Prior to this appointment Herb served as controller for Polymer Industries, Inc., a manufacturer of chemicals for the textile and packaging industries and one of the three companies in the Chemical Group. He was also manager of planning for the adhesives and liquid coatings division of the chemical group. After receiving an MBA degree at New York University, Herb joined Philip Morris in 1966 as a planning analyst and in 1971 was named special assistant to the president of Philip Morris, Incorporated. Herb, his wife Dianne, and their two children live in Westport, Conn.
One sad note from Class Officers Weekend was to learn of the death of Jennifer HollandJohnson, wife of Jim Johnson and sister of TimHolland. Jennifer passed away in New York City in April after a long illness. Personally and on behalf of the Class I express deepest condolences to Jim and Tim and their families.
The first fall issue of the Alumni Magazine will appear next September, a month earlier than in previous years. That issue will contain a schedule of class events. If our Outrageous Events co-chairmen are planning a mini-reunion, or if any local or regional groups wish to announce a local event, please let me know by August 1 in order to appear in the September issue. I need much more news from all of you, so please drop me a line over the summer.
