We counted 38 classmates, 77 good souls of the 1939 community at Bonnie Oaks the weekend of the Holy Cross game. And then there was a coterie which didn't join the mainstream but was seen fleetingly by some about Hanover, including Gus Zitrides, OtieMudge, and Jerry Beatty, and probably more who went unreported.

The official weekend got underway with the annual fall executive committee meeting, which in turn started by welcoming our first distaff member, Betsy Wyman. She had already con- cluded a number of meetings with Dartmouth officialdom and with the grandmother of all such positions, Mrs. Beattie Adams '24. The Class of '39 is of course not unique with its fragile record of longevity which suggests that men are inclined to leave this coil while the wife remains. And if she chooses to remain in the class fellowship, her husband, lives with her and us, and our losses are halved. So be it!

Joe Batchelder, Wells Bates, Jim Corner,Jack Coulson, Walt Darby, Robb DeGraff, WesGoding, Lou Highmark, Bob Howe, DickJackson, Bob Kaiser, Bert MacMannis, DustyRohde, and Endy Smith made up the complement of committee members present. Sorely missed were such regulars as Georgie Hanna (recuperating from a gall bladder operation), Hank Conkle (tied down to his shop in Cashiers, N.C. which is having such a big year he couldn't get away), Moreau Brown (in the midst of a move to California), Sam Hird (whose house was caught in a garden club tour and needed attending), Bill Webster (hosting a long lost aunt of Bunnie's), John Steele (who must have been on an assignment), Ed Oppenheim (recovering from last August's open heart surgery), and Bozo Noland.

Our treasurer Cornie Miller (also on the lam) sent along an encouraging report which indicates that our 40th year goal of $40,000 is on target. Trouble is we spent an inordinate amount of time disagreeing on what this .gift should be. Final decision was left until the spring meeting, when the chairman of the gift committee, Georgie Hanna, is back to strength.

Jim Corner and Bob Howe were given a round of applause for their record-breaking alumni fund leadership. Their immediate reward was encouragement to get back into the hustings for the first year of the "Campaign Fund for Dartmouth," and our 1979 reunion commitments. Howe, incidently, will be enlisting some highpowered help in this last endeavor. At the same time, Wes Goding was signed on as an assistant class agent to help.Corner, by unanimous vote, although Wes remained speechless during the poll.

Darby promised six newsletters in the upcoming year, being two more than usual.

Bequest chairman Kaiser reported two matured bequests, one from Howard Bemis, and a recent addition from the late Jim Sampson. We have four life income trusts in behalf of the College of $225,000 total, 33 expectancies, and, appropriately, 39 men who have indicated an interest in some form of trust. Kaiser, doubling in brass as our fall reunion chairman, gained agreement that next year's would also be held at Bonnie Oaks, despite a fine new Hilton Inn going up in West Lebanon off Route 89. (It will be September 23 during the Penn game. Plan to make it.)

Following the Friday morning meeting, the usual golf and tennis tournaments were held, and the night's activities topped off Holy Cross eve. Saturday saw the usual picnic at the Kaisers' under lowering skies. There was a half-time recognition of members of the '37 undefeated football squad which included Messrs. Highmark, Coulson, Jackson, Larry Vulte, HerbMattlage, Rodg Harrison, Colby Howe, JoePyrtek, and Hank White. From other classes, Fran Schildgrin, Bill Hutchinson, and Bud Lynch (among others) were present.

At this writing Larry and Jane Vulte are in Austria attending a gathering of retired Pan Am pilots. Colby and Pat Howe were on from California to see five days of the American Cup off Newport, to reune, and to double back to hometown Philly to see some friends.

It was particularly good to see Joe Batchelder and Robb DeGraff, who have bounced back from open heart surgery and a stroke respectively. They looked great, and their golf only accented how complete their recovery has been.

Beyond those already mentioned, let it be known that the following were in attendance: Curt and Barbara Anderson, Dick and Jan Brooks, Tom and Liz Burrell, Bill and Ethel Carter, Jack and Ruth Cathcart, Moose and Priscilla Dudis, Doug and Grace Farrington, Jack and Kay Haverfield, Jack and Lois Kuhlke, Bob and Marianne Loughry, Hugh and Trudy McLaren, Skip & Penny Morse, Bud and Marybelle Richardson, Doc and Chip Tower, Bob and Dale Bryant, Jack and Lil Cumming, George Mcllroy, Jim Brigden, and Kim Ayres and spouses. Space limits recounting the succulent news bits picked up from the gathering, but these will come with our next installment.
