The only man in our class whose birthday falls in October was born under the sign of Libra, the Balance, Alfred Humphries. He is hereby entitled to all the benefits which accrue to this auspicious circumstance, and he deserves the congratulations of all the members of the Class.
As we have remarked before, walking has become a very popular activity in this neck of the woods, but George Forbes in Laconia, N.H., writes to us in very legible Chinese (so he says) the admonition, "Walk, walk slow."
Writing last June, he says, "The Valley Forge winter is now long past, the birds sing, and summer is nigh.
"I have been unable to make my usual trips to Florida these last two years, but I hope to be fit this coming season to resume the pleasure."
Hugh Mackinnon writes to us from beautiful California in June. "Thank you for your birthday wishes. It is nice to hear from you, and I appreciate receiving your greetings. Your request for some news reminds me that recently my house was broken into and heirlooms taken, among them my senior cane. Just why the thief wanted this is uncertain, unless he happened to be decrepit. But let us hope that if he has Occasion to examine the two hundred and fifty carvings of the men of 1914, he will be smitten with admiration and inspired, if not, to dare a deed for the old mother, at least to grow the hand of restraint for further unsolicited visitations.
"Also about this time I decided to give up driving, not that I dislike being behind the wheel, but on the other hand Cable cars, buses, and BART Make transport an envious art.
My 1950 De Soto, with me for all its 28 years, stands waiting in my garage for its next owner. Despite its age I am sure that it promises to any one speed and support rivaling those of a senior cane."
Jim Wulpi writes to us from his home in Fort Wayne, Ind., "Many thanks for your birthday greetings. Yep, the 89th slipped up on me the other day. I have been extremely lucky with my health. (I take a spoonful of Geritol once a year.) Golf occupies most of my time, as I play in a seniors club here and we have tournaments every week. I also attend the 'Old Timers' trips to many foreign and local golf outings. Remember, I worked for 30 years in the aviation business, and I am now enjoying the fringe benefits which I earned. It's great.
"I wonder how many of my 'A.D.' brothers are still around? I hear from Frank Llewellyn at Christmas time but would love to hear more.
"This winter I'll probably dodge the severe winters here in Indiana and go as per usual over to the Mediterranean area to bask in the sun and try to keep my putting eye in shape. I never lose a ball any more because I don't knock them far enough to lose sight of 'em."
