Office of Development Report of Voluntary Giving
October 1978

The Campaign for Dartmouth includes all gifts from private sources and I am pleased to report on behalf of the Trustees that $42.6 million was pledged or paid in the 1977-78 fiscal year, truly an auspicious beginning.

I must single out for special mention the remarkable achievements -of the Alumni Fund: $5.3 million (a record), 61% participation and a record breaking achievement by 1953. Another record was set by the Bequest Program which raised $7.5 million. The following pages detail those successes.

With such sustained support from alumni, parents and friends, I am confident the Campaign for Dartmouth will achieve its goal of $160,000,000 by 1982.

The greatest Alumni Fund in Dartmouth's history in 1978 totalled $5,317,218 from 20,651 alumni. 1978 marked the first year the Fund exceeded $5-million, surpassing the goal by 6% and - of the 1977 Fund by over $600,000 or 13%. At 61% participation, Dartmouth stands first in the nation.

Reunion classes raised $2,018,309, and records were set by the Classes of 1918, 1923, 1949, 1953 and 1973. 1953 became the first class to exceed $1-mil!ion in one year; of the $1,000,053 total, $750,000 was allocated to the Alumni Fund and $250,053 was earmarked for the Trustees' discretionary use for the Campaign for Dartmouth.

Non-reunion classes exceeded their 1977 counterparts by 24%, providing great promise for continuing strength of the Fund. Two classes, 1954 and 1958, became the first non-reunion classes to top $100,000.

All in all, the 1978 Alumni Fund was enormously successful and provides early momentum for the 5-year Campaign for Dartmouth.

New Alumni Fund Endowments Within the past year, many individual funds have been established through outright gift, bequest or life income trust to provide income annually to the Alumni Fund, credited to the class of the donor. This program has grown rapidly over the last few years and offers a fine opportunity to perpetuate one's Alumni Fund giving. Space does not permit listing the individual funds in this report.
