This is a fresh-water diatom, Cymbellacistula. No one using a naked eye has seen Cymbella cistula looking quite like this because the creature is only a fraction of a millimeter long. It would take thousands to blanket a page this size. Professor Nina Allen of Biology took the photograph with a scanning electron microscope.
