Yesterday brought the first killing frost of the season after a prolonged period of gorgeous but rather dry early fall weather here in Hanover. The trees are approaching a state of full vibrant color as that special season of New England glory arrives. Peak color now is expected during the week of the Harvard game. Good timing.

Just as the football season started, the New York Times published a list of the winningest major college teams for the last ten years. Two Ivy League teams were included. Yale placed 12th and Dartmouth ended up 20th, with a won-lost percentage of .683.

Dartmouth's 40-7 victory over Pennsylvania was an impressive start for the 100th anniversary of Dartmouth football. The team was able to move with ease in the air and on the ground, and Joe Yukica was able to test his entire team. It made a lot of people here hope that Dartmouth was going to have a superior season. Along came New Hampshire, who trounced us 24-7, a stunning upset. The game was closer than the score, but New Hampshire's line simply outcharged us during the first half, and a couple of key interceptions put an end to our hopes of staying in the game.

George and Andy Carr were here for the game with sons Nicky 'Bl, Griff, and daughter Meredith staying with Reg and Nancy Pierce.Don Furber was here at Pierce's on an overnight during one of his frequent business trips to northern New England.

Dartmouth does have a nationally ranked team this year though in field hockey as we are currently 3-0 and ranked 13th in the country.

Great news about Chip Coleman made the press with announcement of his appointment and confirmation by the New Jersey Senate as judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of Monmouth County. His confirmation was unanimous after several senators lauded his record as a legislator and county prosecutor.

Bill Graulty reports that Norton Virgien recently was named realtor of the year by the Greater Hartford Board of Realtors. He is president of the Heritage Group Inc. in West Hartford, Conn., and has been very active in the real estate business and the community for over 20 years.

Dr. Fred and Rita Eadie of Norwich, Conn., were in Hanover this summer attending Alumni College, that great program that redirects ones thinking away from present-day concerns to focus on essential truths.

The Valley News recently reported that a play, Moonwalk, written by Bob Ellis, is being aired by Mutual Radio Theatre. It is a romantic drama, set in Hanover, about a Dartmouth alumnus. This is the fourth play Bob has written for Mutual Radio Theatre (formerly Sears Radio Theatre) in a series that is a part of the resurgence of radio drama. A fifth play he has written will be aired in October.

Dave Weld tells of a chance encounter with Dr. Nick Vorys during a seafood fest on Nantucket, where Nick visits frequently to sharpen his golf game amidst those great surroundings.

Perhaps some of you have seen a recent Bermuda Travel Agency advertisement appearing in the New York Times and featuring Janet and Lucien Burnet, daughter and son-in-law of Boband Jackie Hooper.

Jim Crawford has dropped us a line to say that he is back in Fairfield, Conn., after more than two years of living in London and traveling all over the continent. The traveling will continue with about half-time journeying to the U.K. and the mainland.

Dave and Jean Weld are off to Japan, China, and Hong Kong as they join Dartmouth friends on a three-week tour to savor the sights, sounds, smells, and culture of the Orient.

Dr. Dave Stephenson, the Denver, Colo., radiologist, writes that he still finds time to ski, climb mountains (though they are getting higher), and go fly fishing in the high lakes and streams. Son David '72 is just finishing his Ph.D.

We were saddened to learn that JohnSirignano Jr. passed away of a heart attack at his home in Brooklyn, N.Y., in August. He had just been appointed administrative judge for the Social Security Administration after years as the senior trial lawyer for the New York office of the Department of Justice Antitrust Division. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Suzanne and their five children.

The final tally on '46 giving for our 35th reunion was a total of $280,457 from 412 participants, exceeding the goal of $250,000. Dartmouth again leads all colleges in the country with participation from 63 per cent of alumni. Please keep in touch. Best regards.

John B. Whitman '46, the vice president and treasurer of Hollis House Realty, Inc., in Wellesley, Mass., received a Dartmouth Alumni Award in June in recognition of "a career of service that few have equaled." In addition to Whitman's civic and church activities, his citation noted his service to his Class and the College as an admissions worker, as class agent, as newsletter editor, as class chairman, as fund-raiser, and as Dartmouth club and class president.
