Football co-captain Dave Shula, holder of all major Dartmouth receiving records, was named winner of the Division I Gold Helmet Award by the New England Football Writers Association. The award is presented for outstanding performance throughout the season. The split end, an All-Ivy performer, was also selected to play in the Senior Bowl Game in Mobile, Alabama. During his three varsity years, Shula caught 103 passes in Ivy League play to eclipse the previous mark of 99 held by Don Clune of Penn. Co-captain Jerry Pierce, a linebacker, was the recipient of the Bob Blackman Trophy, awarded annually to the team's most valuable player.
Goalkeeper Andy Krahling was named the most valuable player of the men's soccer team, which posted a 6-6-2 record. Krahling, a junior, had six shutouts during the season, a Dartmouth record.
Spring is the prime season for the golf team, but the Green swingers were busy this fall. Coach Bill Johnson's golfers finished sixth out of 25 teams in their first fall tournament and then won the northern New England E.C.A.C. event, which qualified them for the ten-team final. Dartmouth finished fourth ahead of Princeton, the only other Ivy qualifier.
Carey Wilson, then a callow freshman, works under the watchful eyes of Cornell in last season's game at Thompson Arena.
