This being the first issue of the MAGAZINE with class notes since the end of the Alumni Fund campaign, we hasten to congratulate our class agent, Bill Marx, and his many assistants for their hard work. Bill wrote all '28ers in August thanking them for the $66,924 contributed, an increase of 30 per cent over last year, with a participation of 87.4 per cent.

George and Marion Davis returned from London on the QEII on August 19, having had a very exciting trip. George has called a meeting of the officers and executive committee on October 1, scheduling a full agenda devoted largely to planning the 55th reunion. We want to keep reminding you of the dates June 13, 14, and 15 so that you will start making your plans.

A record turnout at the mini-reunion October 1-3 is assured. All Norwich Inn reservations were taken, but as usual Herb and Mimi Sensenig are helping '28ers find places to stay; we just learned that their friend Ellie Blanchard in Norwich is taking in Jerry and RachelSass. Ellie is the widow of Roy Blanchard '27 and granddaughter of President William Jewett Tucker. Speaking of Dr. Tucker, I was fortunate to get a job from Mrs. Tucker at the start of my sophomore year, earning rent free a room on the third floor of their Occom Ridge home. My duties were to carry meal trays upstairs to Dr. Tucker. He was 85 and bedridden due to heart problems, but his mind was keen and he usually asked me to stop after the evening meal and talk with him. I always felt it was a great privilege to get to know this great leader of Dartmouth who was president from 1893 to 1909- His only visitor his last two years, other than family members, was President Hopkins, who came once a week. Dr. Tucker died September 29, 1926.

Fifty friends and neighbors of Mimi and Herb Sensenig gathered July 24 at the home of Ellie Blanchard to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Arranged by six hostesses, the affair was a complete surprise on a gorgeous summer evening. Among the guests were recently widowed Laura Sadler, Marg and Joe Tidd, and Allene and Curly Prosser. Curly gave the toast and Allene read a poem to Mimi and Herb. A gala occasion.

Frank and Chopin Hankins are coming to the mini-reunion, although the date conflicts with his Pam Am Clipper Pioneers annual reunion in San Diego. Their son, Tim '62, is now a professor of astronomy at Dartmouth. I wrote Frank several months ago about a vacation we took on St. Lucia and he replied: "Your trip brings back many fine memories. In our seaplanes we had to take off downwind in the first flush of dawn to make the whole day's schedule no night flying allowed. In those days the only hotel had room for about ten."

Hammie Hammesfahr wrote in July, "At long last we have a granddaughter at Dartmouth she is Gratia Lee Robertson and is doing well this summer semester. Her home is Evergreen, Colo. As for Gratia and me, all is well and we have just completed our 26th cruise down in Maine aboard a Concordia yawl lots of good sailing, with a little (?) fog."

Charley and Mary Proctor have a granddaughter, Heidi Cary, who finished her first year at Dartmouth and liked it very much. She is the daughter of Skip Cary '53, who was killed several years ago, leaving Nancy with three children. Nancy is now married to Gerry Pesman.

The above two '28 Dartmouth grandchildren bring the count to four. The first two grandchildren were listed in the June issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE . Any more proud grandparents to be added to the list?

A card from Roy Myers says he is seeing friends all over Europe, Germany, Vienna, the Riviera, Switzerland, and France. Two weeks later Roy and Fred Fellingham '27 sent a joint card from Oslo that they were touring Scandinavia.

Ellie and Nellie Jones have just returned from three months in Idaho. On their last day of their trip home, Nellie slipped on rocks in Grand Canyon National Park and got a bad break in her right arm. At Thanksgiving time they will be in New Canaan, Conn., visiting their daughter and family, the Charles A. Parkers. Hope any '28ers around there will get in touch with them.

Since our last notes, we have been saddened by the death of the following classmates: C. Murray Sawyer on February 15, Fran Johnson on May 23, Ed Lockett on June 18, AlMavon on June 23, and Curly Sadler on July9.

Marian Miner Cook (second from right), widow of John Brown Cook '29, was recently awardedthe 1982 "Robert Fthe 1982 "Robert Fletcher Award" by the Thayer School of Engineering. The first woman to receivethe award, she has long been interested in and supportive of Thayer's programs. Also pictured above,at the award ceremony, are her son Gregory (far left), Dartmouth '69 and Thayer '70; his wife;and Thayer Dean Carl Long.
