Hello again to all of my readers! The four months since my last column seem to have gone by so quickly. I hope that the summer was a good one for all.
I much appreciate the notes from Michael Dyer, Jim Buchman, and Bill Badger that I received over the summer. Mike and his wife, Margot Flowers, have certainly been busy since graduation. Mike received his Ph.D. from Yale in computer science in May of this year and is working as a senior research scientist for Cognitive Systems Inc. in New Haven, Conn. The company designs and markets artificial intelligence software. Margot will be receiving her doctorate in artificial intelligence from Yale in December. Both have accepted positions as assistant professors at U.C.L.A. starting in January 1983 Mike sent a special "hello" to all of his DKE fraternity buddies.
Bill and Pam Badger have made their home up in the Manchester Center area of Vermont. I received a wonderful announcement of the birth of one William Theodore Badger, who weighed in at eight pounds, two ounces, on May 19. The announcement featured a drawing of two badgers (the animal kind) doting over a newborn, with one onlooker asking the other, "Cute little badger, ain't he?" The response was a hardy, "Eyuh." Bill wrote that he thought that the card pretty well summed things up, and I certainly agree.
Jim Buchman was kind enough to write, giving the details of the marriage of our classmate Richard Kenney to Mary Hedberg on July 4 at the First Congregational Church in Falmouth, Mass. Rick's father, Laurence Kenney '28, Tuck '29, was best man. Dan Cooperman '69 played a prominent part in the service with selections from John Donne. I gather that there were two days of events preceding the wedding, with dancing, baseball, volleyball, and other pastimes. Lamb raised, butchered, and cooked by George Ainley and his wife, Julie Levy, was featured. Assistance came from William Wood, his wife Tina, and their two children, Joshua and Marina. On hand as well were George Kenney '24, Tuck '25, Arthur Kneerim '28, and John Mrozak '68 and their families. Our classmate Fred Michael was also a guest.
Rick and Mary later visited Jim Buchman, his wife of four years, Marja Vallila, and their daughter Petra at the end of the summer. Rick and Mary have now settled once again into Chapel Hill, N.C., where Mary is completing her Ph.D. in marine biology. Rick continues with his poetry writing.
Also in the marriage department, I have word of Mike Swistak's marriage to Peggy Louise Otto in the Memorial Lutheran Church in Seattle, Wash. Peggy and Mike are living in West Warwick, R.I. Peggy is a clinical and pediatric nutritionist at St. Joseph's Hospital and Mike is a fellow in the cardiology department at Rhode Island Hospital. Both are summa cum laude graduates of their respective colleges, where they were each elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In addition to her undergraduate degree, Peggy received a master's degree also at the University of Washington in Seattle in nutrition and child development. Mike, for his part, went on to earn his medical degree at Tufts after graduating from Dartmouth.
A special word of thanks is due all those who worked so hard with the Alumni Fund this year. Details will follow in the coming months, but I gather that we reached our participation goals and that we made good progress in the amount we actually raised, notwithstanding the state of the economy. So we have reason to be proud, and again, thanks to all who contributed and participated.
John R. McKernan Jr. '70, a native of Old Town, Maine, and a Portland lawyer, was walkingdown the coast of Maine last summer in pursuit of a U.S. Congressional nomination when "Red"Boutilier '38 came across him and took this picture. Boutilier reminisced about being "steered to ourseats in Commons during our freshman year" by McKernan's father, the late John R. Sr. '36.
