Sadly, I must report the tragic, senseless death of one of our classmates, John Ralston Williams III. (A full obituary will be published in one of the fall issues of the Alumni Magazine.) John, a devoted family man with a wife (Lucia) and two sons, was struck down by a teenage drunken driver. He had recently moved from Rochester, N.Y., to Virginia Beach, Va. (72 Match Point Drive, 23462) to take a new job.
Some significant news from the College that you may have missed: What with major cuts in federal financial assistance programs, the College will have to limit the financial aid given to needy students. Students will still be admitted on the basis of their academic and personal qualifications, but they may not get all of the money they need. The College, in an effort keep these cuts as low as possible, has come up with a rigorous program of financial cuts and controls over administrative and academic costs, paring more than one million dollars our last year's already lean budget.
S. Woodworth Chittick has been promoted to the newly-created position of vice president corporate planning and business development at Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc. Woody joined the firm in 1980 as director of corporate planning after having spent more than two years with Bain and Company, a stategic management consulting firm in Boston. Woody picked up an M.B.A. from Harvard after graduating from Dartmouth. He lives with his wife jd Anne and three children —Juliana, Benjamin, and Chloe in Cohasset, Mass.
Are you beginning to feel a little old.' The following will not help! There are four children of '62s at Dartmouth, believe it or not. Cris Dowling 'B4 is the son of Pat Dowling of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Jennifer Reinert 84 is the daughter of Jeff Reinert of Rapid City, Cynthia Hatfield '85 is the daughter of John Hatfield of Greensboro, N.C. Pat Milon 85 is the daughter of Frank Milon of Pelham, N.Y.
In case you didn't know, a group of gunG-HO '62s have put up $32,000 as a challenge to fellow classmates. The money will be used to match the increase for each reunion gift is at least five times the 1981 gift It will also match each new gift from '62s who did nOt give in 1980 or 1981. The Alumni Fund has as its objectives for our class 535 contributors, or an unbelievable 82 per cent of the class, an monetary goal of $462,000. (Yes, from one class!) We also hope to endow a class of 1962 faculty fellowship.
As this was going to press, I received John Walters' letter noting that "no class has put together a class memento that is as unique and special as out Winter Carnival print." Depending on one's contribution this year, classmates may receive a signed, framed, or matted print of a magnificent, original print by well-known artist Charles Wysocki. Great thanks are due to Dave Usher for his selfless help in this regard.
The quote of the month comes from our hard-working class president, John Clark. John was recently talking to Don Smith 53, who was praising the class of '62 for its unbelievable loyalty and generosity to the College. Smith said: The '62s are the class of'53 of the sixties." John Clark replied: "No, Don, the '53s were the '62s of the fifties!"
Keep up the good work, '62s. At today's writing, our Alumni Fund contributions are at a record pace and nearing our very ambitious objectives.
