TWENTY-FIFTH REUNION
Two hundred and sixty one classmates "Returned to the Source" at Dartmouth for our 25th reunion, accompanied by 459 wives, children, and sweethearts. It was an unqualified success, as Dan Goggin and his reunion team put on a superbly executed three-and-a-half-day extravaganza that reintroduced us to our College, our classmates, and, perhaps to some extent, ourselves.
Assisting Dan were: Frank Mooney, who tirelessly handled money and administrative matters; Dick Perkins, whose publicity insured a fine '57 turnout; Dick Mann, who obtained the memorabilia; Bob Marchant, who arranged tent activities; Connie Goggin, whose floral decorations were übiquitous; George Johnston, Skip Traynham, and Bob Schreibman, who put on a stirring memorial service; Dave Cook and George Southwick, who structured some highly interesting seminars; Bob Shirley, who somehow coaxed Thayer food to new levels of culinary excellence; John Donnelly, who kept the '57 kids busy; Ed Waldron, who provided the hard-to-top initial reunion event and then emceed the class dinner; and Charley Sellman, who organized the fun sports program. Three other contributors. were Tom Schwarz and Mike Smith, who put together the outstanding 25th yearbook, and the finest sales agent of our generation, "Second Effort" Bob Macdonald, who somehow helped us reach an all-time record for a 25th reunion Alumni Fund contribution of $1,013,022. The '57 wives added $1,500 in honor of their husbands. These funds have been used to acquire a coffee table and two end tables which will be placed in the Alumni Room at the Blunt Alumni Center with a commemorative '57 plaque.
Reunion itself was a delight. After weeks of rain, Hanover turned sunny. Our "Return to the Source" began with the Thursday afternoon nuptials of Ed Waldron and his new wife Jan. Ed advises us that he will try to think of something equally special for our 50th reunion.
On Thursday night we had a fun dinner at Thayer, after which many members of the class went on to Spaulding for a Glee Club concert (with a cameo appearance by '57 Glee Club members). Then it was back to the tent for dancing to the spirited Reunion Jazz Band of Dave Cook and Al Shapiro. Tent activities until early morning were a constant throughout the weekend.
On Friday, Joe Stevenson began his twoday dominance of the class running events with a win in the 2.6-mile '57 reunion run. Also held that morning was an interesting seminar entitled "Innermost Thoughts About Careers His and Hers." It was chaired by Professor Stan Rosenberg and the panel consisted of Arlene Epstein, Dora Hayden, Becky King, and Martha Perkins. The four panelists had impressive leadership qualities and career achievements that over the years had emerged with or without spousal encouragement. At noontime on Friday we had a picnic at Storrs Pond that was somewhat reminiscent of a good Green Key weekend party. In the evening we joined the alumni parade, marching from the class tent, located near the Tuck School, down to Thompson Arena, led by Tanzi riding in a car. He looks exactly as he did during the fall of 1953. A dinner with other reunion classes followed.
Saturday's events included a class memorial service led by Skip Traynham, who is the dean of the Tucker Foundation, and by Rabbi Bob Schreibman. Following a Dave McLaughlin speech and lunch in the Bema we had what to many was a reunion highlight a panel held in 105 Dartmouth involving Marty Anderson, Monte Pascoe, and Larry Silberman. National and state issues were discussed on an insider basis by these three qualified classmates. One issue of particular interest was the adequacy of the national defense budget, which Larry Silberman authoritatively called into question. That evening we had a class of '57 reception at Thompson Arena, followed by the class dinner, which was another standout event. Ed Waldron is a world-class master of ceremonies, and used his inexhaustible supply of zingers in an entertaining peformance. A special award, an attache case, was given to Dave Orr, who as a member of the College's alumni office has been a constant lobbyist for '57 causes. We were also treated to some remarks by reunion head Dan Goggin and Ralph Manuel, dean of the College. Tom Schwarz made a motion of appreciation for the outgoing class officers President George Southwick, Secretary Ben Bixby, and Treasurer Thomas Keller. Three of the new officers were announced
President Jim Dalton, Secretary DanSearby, and Treasurer Jack Hall. Other key positions will be named by Jim Dalton and announced at a Future date. The banquet concluded with Dartmouth songs, including a mellow rendition of "Men of Dartmouth."
The Sunday brunch at the tent concluded reunion events, after which what had become a '57 family broke back into its various parts. But not before one senior College official had noted that "through the accomplishments of the past year the class of '57 has jumped into the ranks of the very best Dartmouth classes." These accomplishments include the individual career and family successes of our classmates, coupled with the reunion, its book and turnout, and our record-breaking Alumni Fund contribution. Well done, guys!
