Class Treasurer Jon Walton issued his an nual report for the year ended July 31, 1983. It showed us still in the black, with a modest surplus of receipts over expenditures. John raises the issue of whether the class should continue to send the ALUMNI MAGAZINE to those.classmates who have not made one single dues payment since graduation. If you have any strong feelings one way or the other, contact Pete Zischke.

Former Tuck tycoon and now a Wall Street tycoon, John Rosen wald, was recently named to the board of the New York University Medical Center. Rosie, a partner in Bear Stearns and Company, has a wide range of outside interests, among which are the Foundation for Children with Learning Disabilities, the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for the Social Sciences at Dartmouth. Congratulations, Rosie, on your new appointment.

Herb Roth reported in from New Mexico, where he and Jim Gardiner ably assisted John Yates in celebrating his 54th birthday. The locale was John's " + D" Ranch, which is about 100 miles from Rudoso, N.M. (Anyone passing through, be sure to stop by.) The birthday party was planned by Peggy Yates as a surprise. Herb said that Peggy went to great lengths (to New England, in fact), to purchase the Dartmouth banner in the accompanying photo. Peggy is one of the few ladies who can claim to be a full blooded member of the class; she arrived in Hanover in the fall of 1948 when husband John signed up as a freshman. Peggy inherited a clutch of John's cronies, serving as den mother and supplying coffee and goodies to those assembled for the frequent evenings devoted to poker. Bob Haycock and Bob Williams were unable to make it to Rudoso but telephoned their birthday greetings. The ceremony included a moment of silent prayer for Jay Gintel, the last member to join this group, who died before graduation and who was godfather to the Yateses' first child.

You may have read that the Libertarian Party held its convention in New York City in August. The New York Times carried a picture of Ed and Alicia Clark greeting the registrants. Ed, who polled 920,000 votes in the 1980 presidential election, declared that he would not be a candidate in 1984. Ed and Alicia, who is the party's national chairman, were described by the Times as the political Ma and Pa of this laissez-faire party. Well, they are certainly not an old Ma and Pa.

The Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company has elected Drew Waitley a senior vice president. Drew, who joined Continental right after graduation, heads the bank's Africa/Middle East group of international banking services.

John Collins was recently named to the board of the Clorox Company, where he is group vice president with overall responsibility for the company's U.S. retail operations. Congratulations to both Drew and John.

With this issue, the ALUMNI MAGAZINE is changing its typeface to improve readability (although in my case they should increase the size of the type even more!).
