Summer winding down as I write this; two days ago everyone was complaining about the record-breaking heat. By the time you read this, those of us living in the Northeast will be complaining about the cold!

Any one else notice how this column is inching in exorably closer to the front of the book?

Of the little news there is this month, most relates to the proposed changes in the board of trustees selection process; again, by the time this hits your retina, it will all (one hopes) have been resolved. First, I was at a meeting with Duncan Wood (an Eastman neighbor), and we took a couple of minutes to discuss the College and the mailings we have all been receiving. We both agreed that it didn't seem fair to change the rules because you don't like the score, and that the single best thing that the College has done in recent memory was to admit women.

Carl Strathmeyer accepted a buyout from his marketing position at Intel at the end of 2006 and has been trying to establish himself as an independent marketing consultant specializing in the launching of "first-of-their-kind" products. As part of this effort he has been reconnecting with folks, including Dave Graves, who is at PermissionTV. Carl was moved to send his thinking on the governance situation to newsletter editor Steve Fox. I was particularly impressed with his closing paragraph: "How about a clear vision for the College, a clear plan for how to get there and a clear way' to measure how we're doing against that plan? The College should set a good example for its students by conducting a proper academic debate on the issues."

News or a note are always appreciated; any feedback on the class 60th birthday party proposal?
