Sometimes I wait until the last week before submitting my column to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Oftentimes it's because I am waiting for the last tidbits of news to dribble in. Other times it's because a fortuitous event is taking place late in the month which I want to dwell on in the column. Such was the case this month. For this past weekend (September 24), except for the score, an absolutely perfect football weekend was witnessed by any who saw Dartmouth play Army. We were fortunate enough to arrive at West Point via the Hudson River, thanks to the innovativeness of the Dartmouth Club of Northern New Jersey, which chartered a converted river steamer to cruise up the river on a perfect, crystalclear, Indian summer day. (Make no mistake, our "yacht" did not resemble the luxurious Highlander owned by Malcolm Forbes with crew of ten, but rather, more humbly, bore a vague resemblance to the African Queen- crew of three, cash bar, and a head just big enough to back into.) Besides the cruise and the picturesque panorama of the long, grey line parading over the plain, there was a certain joy in seeing familiar faces again.

Jim Everett, Jack Garamella, Wynn Stuebener, and Hector Montroni were conveniently seated together where I could buttonhole them all in a brief, five-minute flurry during half-time. Jim reported that his oncology practice south of Boston is going well. He was in the company of sons Parker, Brad, and Charlie. Jack, who first refused to be quoted, admitted that the ink he received in this column for his new restaurant had not resulted in any gastrointestinal bleeding. Jack did mention, by the way, that "Better Late Than Never" Gary Jefferson had a new three week-old baby girl (two months old, as you read this), whom I expect to report on more fully in next month's column. And Wynn Stuebener paused briefly enough to say he would be at Harvard before he went on his way to the latrine. Hector and Myra had come to the game the hard way (by car) and were enjoying the sun and half-time performance as much as Kris and I were.

The sun and warmth of a bright fall day lasted longer than Dartmouth's lead. It was an exciting game we should have won. But sail back down the Hudson we did wine glasses tinkling in the sunset.

Further news briefs this month include the announcement of the promotion of JackChrist to associate professor at Ripon College in Ripon, Wise. Jack earned his Ph.D. in English from Pennsylvania and joined Ripon's English department in 1970 as an assistant professor. From 1974 until 1979 he administered the college relations program, and in 1979 returned to teaching and also founded Ripon College's leadership studies program.

And finally, Jim Season has done it again. Not only has he made the transition from Manhattan urbanite to New Rochelle suburbanite (getting rid of his Delorean along the way), but he is expecting child number two in March. Jim claims this is just a start. We'll check in next March to make sure that he hasn't decided to give up early.

Happy Thanksgiving!
